Product Information

Director Sam Wood's final film presents the real-life story of courageous sports hero Monty Stratton. Jimmy Stewart presents a career-defining performance as the young Chicago White Sox pitcher who loses a leg in a tragic hunting accident. Depressed, Stratton at first refuses to walk with his new artificial limb, but under the encouragement of his wife, Ethel (June Allyson), he relearns to walk just as his young son takes his own first steps. With courage and determination, Stratton builds his strength and returns to the sport at which he excelled, becoming a minor league star. This uplifting story avoids becoming maudlin by virtue of Wood's excellent directing, a truly beautiful performance from Jimmy Stewart, an Academy Award-winning script from Douglas Morrow and Guy Trosper, and the very real chemistry between Stewart and actress Allyson.

THE STRATTON STORY
"The Stratton Story" is a beautiful picture! For not the first time, James Stewart is ideally cast as the title character, in this case, he was the personal choice of Stratton himself! Detailing fairly accurately Monty's early Texas roots, Frank Morgan appears too as a retired pitching coach, enthusiastic after seeing Monty pitch a minor league game.. Agnes Moorehead is winning as his compassionate yet, sweetly sarcastic mother out on the farm.Many of that eras greatest ball players play themselves as Stratton works his way out of the minors all the way to the Chicago White Sox. June Allyson is the blind date, who though not initially keen on Stratton at first, quickly warms to his innocent, honest,and sweet farmboy demeanor. MArking their first appearance together as a screen team, ... "The Stratton Story" is a beautiful picture! (For anyone whose family has ever been hit by a family crisis like Monty's, this is by far, deeply inspiring and strengthening.To THE STRATTON STORY, I owe simply, VERY MUCH; for during the years leading up to my own husband's leg amputation, I too had a small son, barely old enough to grasp why his dad couldnt play soccer with him anymore..You are left floundering initially, especially with children, HOW to explain it..Two separate hospital visits came and went, my husband kept his leg, then finally it happened.Thanks to THE STRATTON STORY, my son , at the age of six, was prepared for this event, and was able to see his father come back after a lost limb and resume living. The picture was a tremendous aid to myself as well, during many dark days ahead.) For the joy of seeing Jimmy and Junie onscreen together for the first time, this one's a beautiful story that will definitely be played more than once on the DVD player.For people who can use a little "Hope" as well in their own life,TRUST ME! This is a MUST for the DVD shelf!

Warm, engaging story. James Stewart is very believable and so is June Allyson. Frank Morgan in one of his best roles: fresh and not stereotyped!

Overcoming all Odds and pursuing one's passion.
Delightful TRUE Story of Stratton. If you want an uplifting story about overcoming difficult odds, this this story is for you. It is combined with a love story that is equally delightful. Jimmy Stewart and June Alison are wonderful as is Jimmy's mother in the movie. The time flew by as I watched this movie.

The Stratton Story
Jimmy Stewart is one of the most believable actors that I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Especially in a true story it's important that the actor makes you believe he IS ther person in the story. As a diehard baseball fan I had heard about Monte Stratton. I saw this years ago and watching it again....it was better than I remember! In an age where we have trouble finding family films I'd recommend this movie to all. Every kid dreams of being "someone"....that usually doesn't quite work out...this movie teaches us what we do when it doesn't work out.Jimmy Stewart is one of the most believable actors that I have ever had the pleasure to watch. FIVE STARS FOR THE STRATTON STORY!!!
I must admit that I haven't viewed this movie, but I have certainly heard OVER AND OVER everything about its story line and how great a movie it is. I purchased this movie for my mother who likes movies from the 1940's. She has told me that it is among her favorites and she has MANY movies from which to choose. She watches this movie over and over and has referred it to other people as an uplifting movie to watch. She has lent it to some friends and she is getting another copy to give to the nursing home where my father now lives.
