When a 12-year-old chimney sweep is wrongfully blamed for being a thief, he makes a run for it, and lands head-first into a pool of water. There he encounters a wondrous civilization of underwater creatures who resemble humans in their behavior. Poverty, Theft, Abuse, and Psychedelic Sea Creatures
The Water Babies, a 1978 British/Polish co-production based on Charles Kingsley's classic children's novela, features the legendary James Mason, and the voice talents of Jon Pertwee (of Dr. Who fame). If you're a fan of the "brown seventies" look - grainy film, melancholy flute melodies processed with tape delay, shoddy but loveable cell animation, then you will love The Water Babies. For an incredible double feature, watch it back to back with The Wicker Man! I've watched this film at least 20 times over the last few years with my neice, and we never get tired of it. I prefer this old school approach to the "children's" film - including Shakespearian actors, weird mysteries, bittersweet orchestral melodies, etc... - over anything that Disney has ever done. This film is from Europe, not ... The story: When Tom, an orphaned chimney-sweep is wrongfully accused of theft by his scummy "employment" master (James Mason) and a shut-in clan of landed English country aristocrats, he heeds the psychic urgings of a mysterious woman, and jumps into a dangerous river. Once underwater, the live action film turns into full-color cell animation as Tom undergoes a series of trials on his way to meeting the Water Babies, an ageless clan of nymph-like "Water Children", who apparently do nothing but frolic in psychedelic reverie, ride sea dragons and drink from "candy cups" that spring up organically from magic mushrooms! After organizing a vigilante party composed of eccentric loners, Tom succeeds in freeing the Water Babies from evil sharks, and emerges from the depths to take revenge on his abusive employer. The rich family who earlier sicked their hunting dogs on him, now put him in fine clothes and adopt him as part of their family, though none of them believe his story about the Water Babies. In the end, Tom is resigned to a fate in which he is compelled to stare into dark waters, and witness the gloomy apparitions of a psychic witch that he alone can see. A+++ A great film!

LOVE this movie despite plot flaws
This is a movie that I watched when I was a young girl and never forgot. It is certainly not the best movie ever made, but there is something very special about it that I can't quite put my finger on. I LOVE it. I am the kind of person who likes everything explained to me though and for that reason alone this movie drives me crazy. (SPOILER ALERT:) Exactly what/Who is that mysterious witch-lady and what is her relationship with Tom? WHY and HOW did he become a Water Baby ... why was he raised on the earth? It is questions like these that are just eating at me! I thought if I read the book I would get answers, but I just read an article that the book from which this story is "based" is a lot different. So I guess I'll never know what the writer was thinking! I still love this movie though ... This is a movie that I watched when I was a young girl and never forgot. There should be more films like this. (But what is up with the gay seahorse??!!)

An underrated film, very good.
Many people grew up with this film, which was set at Denton Hall, a gorgeous ancient estate in Ilkley, Yorkshire, England. As this is my family seat, I got the film primarily to view the estate. But I was surprised at how charming this film is, and will watch it again and again. The animations are antiquated compared to what we're used to now, therefore the transition between the real actors and their animated underwater characters is a bit jarring. Altogether, though, this is a great film, especially for children or those of us who love beautiful English scenery and great, now lost, English actors.Many people grew up with this film, which was set at Denton Hall, a gorgeous ancient estate in Ilkley, Yorkshire, England. "The Water Babies"
This is another movie that I remember from my childhood and had been looking all over for. I finally found it and it brought back so many memories. Also, my three-year-old daughter loves it, so it is something that I can share with her. This movie is a bit older and the acting and animation are not the best, but it is a nice wholesome family movie that everyone can enjoy, full of imagination and lessons to be learned. I am so happy to finally have this movie. It will get a lot of use by my family.This is another movie that I remember from my childhood and had been looking all over for. I finally found it and it brought back so many memories. Also, my three-year-old daughter loves it, so it is something that I can share with her.
