Almost a great product - - Many frustrations.
US base map version reviewed. Good points: Base Map US version has most roads & Railroads & RR stations EVEN IN EUROPE! This is a product sweet spot and may be the best for your use. Data base is HUGE and searchable by name for Geographic features in the US. (US version) so you can find the Mt peak or other (waterfall, valley...) by name. (UNLIKE Garmin 76CSx). Waypoints and Tracks are stored in GPX files Native on the machine. Machine behaves as USB device with files apparent and swappable when connected to a Windows PC. Most recent Waypoints are stored in new file for easy management of waypoints - not just one big file. User can load own waypoints & tracks files with user names. Many trails & Forest Svc Roads shown. GPS receiver is extremely sensitive. IF you hold it right side ... US base map version reviewed. (Even the Sportrak series) - even in canyons urban and natural and even with heavy tree canopies. Bad Points: Hard to read screen in Daylight! Cover the screen with something to protect it (clear tape?) - you will be clawing at it many times to get it to pan or move to the symbol you desire and it will scratch. Short battery life- 5 hrs typical on 2500 maH NiMH batteries. More than 250ma drain with a useable Voltage threshold of about 1.20V. We call it "The pig". Heavier than most handhelds. Touch screen has foibles like trying to select an Icon for waypoints. Selection of waypoint icons is dumb. - no intersection icon - many "bug" & Dinosaur icons. Very weak alarm sounds - especially waypoint arrival. THe beep is nearly inaudible - the bell not much better. It is a MS Windows CE based system and should have the capability of user download of sounds and images - especially for waypoints & alarms - PHOOEY - try telling that to Magellan. THe "suspend" feature for recording a track while interface is off is good (about 50ma drain in this mode), but is not able to wake the unit up and sound alarm on waypoint arrival (or any position based alarm,..anchor drag). Waking for alarm is only "sleep" mode and only TIME based alarms. - a very expensive alarm clock which eats batteries. Does not provide for easy Sun and moon at an arbitrary location (must disable GPS). Has a cumbersome user interface - non intuitive. Does not hang with antenna pointing up! The sattelites are not underground! I made brass hoops with an improvised mount for holding it upright with neck lanyard. The compass recalibration after battery change is awkward at best. With WinCE, the user should be able to select which file to store a waypoint in or which Waypnt files to turn on to view. - nope! Many of the trails and forest service roads & RR stations dissappear on map scales larger than 1/4 mi (to a .25" shown), and you can't control map detail well. The barometric pressure record is poorly managed. Altitude should be able to use a mix of baro, map and GPS altitudes in much better ways than that offered. (Complementary or Kalman filtering). Ownship arrow has VERY poor characteristics for walking speed threshold between heading and mag north. Trip odometer should accumulate distances during sattelite reception breaks (using logical re-acquisition) - it does not. Summary: We normally leave the old SporTrak at the trailhead and use this unit with "suspend" mode. Yet there are so many frustrations with it's design which could have made a good unit great.

A basic GPS that does the job
This basic handheld GPS is great for tracking my routes, mileage, speed. etc. on my walking and bycycle treks. It's an easy to use unit, and while basic does all that I need. It's light and small to carrry or mount. The battery life is beyond decent too.

Unparelled technology in GPS , very good value for money .
I brought it for navigating our sub tropical forest while hunting & because it looked like a good deal.Owned a Explorist 300 before this & that was great but limited with out topo maps this unit has. The touch screen make for easy & quick nav; ,with back light even in the dark .Can get a positional fix inside my house so the thickest of forest ain't a problem either. 1 thing I really like is the hunting /fishing calender .Works as both bite times for fishing & also when game is going to be not only around but seem to be quite stupid to almost suicidal.Seems to applicable to wild fowl & them with cloven hooves. I've used Garmin GPS that cost 3x as much that don't even come close to the quality of the 610 or the functionality of it.The Magellan610 with the map's package was very good value ... Excellent choice! Great value!
Upgrade to this GPS from GC Explorist. Very accurate and easy to use. Friendly touchscreen and easy to customize to your own preferences. My favorite GPS to date. I use this almost exclusively for geocaching. 2 thumbs up from me!
