For the "300th" Time...
... The movie 300 is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller. It was never meant to be historically accurate. That said, "Last Stand" dovetails perfectly with the film, giving excellent balance. In the two we have a totally new visual style of storytelling, both for fantasy and historical projects. Last Stand of the 300 is a high-caliber production, taking us on a booklike journey. Segments play like chapters, showing us the politics, tactics, weapons and especially the PEOPLE. While "300" is a wild ride that will have you yelling along with the Spartans in that last charge, "Last Stand" is also powerful and can inspire more interest in history. Better Than the Movie
I was disappointed with "300" after all the hype and the Hollywood treatment of this incredible event in history, so decided to go with something more factual. The History Channel does an excellent job of presenting historical events, and they did so here . . . for the most part. Spartan and Persian culture was discussed in detail, as were the events leading up to the Battle of Thermopylae. The movie "300" really didn't cover those areas, and I think it's important to understand the temperament of the people involved and the their history with each other. Weaponry and battle tactics were also covered, which answers questions some might have as to how so few could hold off so many. Topography was a crucial factor, but here I think the producers ... I was disappointed with "300" after all the hype and the Hollywood treatment of this incredible event in history, so decided to go with something more factual. Spartan and Persian culture was discussed in detail, as were the events leading up to the Battle of Thermopylae. Topography was a crucial factor, but here I think the producers missed the mark. The viewer is given computer recreations of the terrain, and there are no actual shots of the ground. I think to be able to see it even as it appears today would be of value to viewers for a more complete understanding of the battle logistics. The Spartan naval forces were discussed in detail for their part in withstanding the Persian invasion, which was not mentioned at all in the movie. The reenactors are much more believable here as well. I think the embellishments in the movie were distracting, and this battle and the people involved can stand on their own merit without Hollywood trappings. If you want a more complete understanding of the battle which changed history, take a look at the History Channel's production.

Great Little Entertaining History Lesson- Go Spartans!
The Last Stand of the 300 tells of the Spartans' combat campaigns against the massive and powerful Persian military forces. The story is a classic tale of heroism and illustrates plainly to the viewer/reader that dedication and purpose can be as formidable as seemingly overwhelming numbers tend to be. What I find so interesting about this documentary is the detail and insight provided by the historians and voices which appear in the picture. Strategies which were used during these campaigns were brilliant on both sides, and I appreciate the way the film makes proper mention of the Greek naval forces. I think this historic tale should be kept alive, and after the 70's era telling of it that seems dated beyond its years, and the ultra-gory 21 Century rendition, I'm ... The Last Stand of the 300 tells of the Spartans' combat campaigns against the massive and powerful Persian military forces. 300 more of the same please.
Although adapted from a graphic novel, this movie is in a class of its own. The use of special effects is well calibrated, considering that the movie relied heavily on it. The story telling should have been speeded up a bit as it tends to drag on in some places, such as the growing up and training phase of the boy who would become the Spartan king. The fight sequences were excellent but tended to become cartoon-like in some places. Too much gore for the younger set but otherwise could make excellent fodder for educating them about pride for one's country, and why it is necessary to prepare to defend ourselves. Overall, a good movie worth keeping.Although adapted from a graphic novel, this movie is in a class of its own. A pivotal battle in Western civilization.
The stand of the 300 elite Spartan warriors was amazing. As this DVD shows, their stand was heroic and courageous. It helped the ancient Greeks defeat the invading armies of the great Persian empire from the East. The Spartans were not soft, like the ancient Athenians. While Athens had a democracy (mob rule), Sparta had a mixed constitution, blending aristocracy, with monarchy, and some democracy. These 300 brave men exemplified the fortitude, integrity and loyalty to city-state that Sparta was able to produce. I recommend that you buy this DVD, to learn more about these remarkable warriors.
