Follow 12-year-old Brendan (voice of Evan McGuire) as he battles Vikings and confronts an ancient serpent god on a mission to locate a legendary crystal and complete the mythical Book of Kells. Brendan lives in a heavily fortified medieval outpost known as the Abbey of Kells, where the ongoing threat of Viking raids causes the peaceful monks to live in a state of constant fear. Along with his uncle, Abbot Cellach, Brendan labors to fortify the abbey walls daily so his people will be protected from invading forces. When the mysterious Brother Aidan arrives at the abbey carrying an unfinished tome filled mystical secrets, Brendan becomes illuminated, and his dormant talents are awakened. The book must be finished, but accomplishing that mission will be no simple task. As the Vikings close in, Brendan ventures into the surrounding forest and prepares to confront his darkest fears. Accompanying him on his dangerous mission is Aisling, a half-wolf/half-human fairy whose powers will help to guide Brendan through this enchanting yet dangerous new world.

Visually Stunning. Historically Engaging.
I LOVE this movie. I was looking for documentaries on The Book of Kells and stumbled across this jem. The whole movie is stylized to look Celt-ish. Lots of swirls and sharp edges and Celtic symbolism. It's quite beautiful. The story is great. Very fun on the magical side but also peppered with the historical realities the first century Irish monks who created the book were facing. A fun movie for kids and adults. There are some quite scary parts that probably aren't proper for young children. I'd say 8-9 year olds and older would be fine. But you know your kid best.I LOVE this movie. A celebration of Irish Art
The Secret of Kells did not receive the movie showings it deserved in they USA. I found out about it by accident and had to buy a copy for myself. It is a Fantasy Story with a smattering of truth that is told in the Irish Tradition. A young orphan sets out on a quest to help create the Book of Kells. With the help of a White Cat and a Fairy Child he succeeds. Wonderful movie!
Based on Irish history and folklore, this is an engaging story purporting to be about the creation of The Book of Kells, from the point of view of a young apprentice. The animation art draws heavily from Celtic style, geometric and fanciful, and is gorgeously colored. And there are magical beings, and an adorable cat.

Secret of the Kells
I saw this film in a theater many years ago. I purchased the dvd as a Bday gift for an adult child who I know would enjoy having it. I hope to watch it again when I visit.
