Reviews
"This isn't the first book to take on the challenge of explaining baseball intricacies, but I've never seen it done better. . . . When it comes to producing 'aha moments' of baseball enlightenment, the book indeed has a high batting average." - The Seattle Times "Hample calls himself an obsessed fan-obsessed in a good way-and the product of his torment is a funny and informative guide for all levels of fans." - Yankees Magazine "Engaging. . . . Hample's book is both deceptive in its simplicity (the basic rules, but also the ten different ways a pitcher can commit a balk) and surprising in its range." - Fortune, "This isn't the first book to take on the challenge of explaining baseball intricacies, but I've never seen it done better. . . . • Watching Baseball Smarter

I bought this book for my daughter who is rapidly becoming a baseball fan. She wanted to learn more about the game. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I too enjoyed this book. I also learned a few things and found a better understanding of the game. Excellent source to fill in those missing facts and concepts. Not only does it discuss some of the more obscure and interesting rules of the game but goes as far as detailing the reasons or the events that led to those rules. I.e., The spitball was banned from professional baseball in 1921 after a player was hit in the head in 1920 and later died of his injuries, the only player to die of injuries sustained during a game. The spitball was 'grandfathered' for active spitballers at the time. The last legal spitball was thrown in ...

  • Great book for a novice.

This book expains baseball to the novice really well. I've watched baseball games occasionally, but never got deep into the game. This book helped me understand the rules, nuances, and strategy of the game. Great book!

  • Makes watching baseball even more enjoyable!

This book is great. It explains everything from why and pitchers throw certain pitches to slang terms. I love baseball and this book has helped me to better understand the game. It is not too technical as to bore and includes interesting facts that keep the book moving along. I love this book and have recommended it to other baseball lovers!

  • It’s very small. My book looked old.
