Help Me I'm Squinting -
Steve Taylor's Creative Edge is so genius in this cd that I couldn't wait for Mr Taylor to come up with a follow up. To my knowledge, he never did- but the focus and drive of this cd kept me waiting for the next song. From Curses, to The Finish Line I was reeled in. Bannerman put a smile to my lips and Easy Listening kept me thinking of Barry Manilow which brought back the good times. I couldn't wait to couch with Desi's preoccupation with death and what it meant for me, but was happy to blame my folks for my moshing tendancies. :) All seriousness aside, this is one cd that splats in my face alot of areas that could be double checked in my own life. an excellent satirical cd dripping with scathing irony
This is Steve's best and most consistent. He bridges his satirical past with poignant cultural relativity. He is aware of the trends, both musically and spiritually. This cd is well-produced and has a vast offering of styles. His sarcasm is always well-founded, even when you find it pointing at yourself. He sees things that others simply do not. He is wise and discerning, creative and odd. His perspectives are unique and sorely needed. His commentary on American Christianity can sometimes be funny but you always know that there's a hidden meaning worthy further consideration. Lament is a rocker that confronts the topic of death in an amusing and provocative way. You really can be ready for death, even if it does come unexpectedly. Bannerman is a hilarious spoof of the placard carrying freak at football games whose sign you annoying have to peer around if you are sitting in the end zone near him; you know, the guy with the rainbow wig and John 3:16. Perhaps such eccentrics are more on track than the rest of us. Perhaps we should grant more credit where it is due, even if it is expressed so zealously. Perhaps. Smug is a sarcastic critique of Christian arrogance. It confronts the notion of looking down on sinners as if Christians have already been perfected. Jesus is for Losers and Finish Line are mellower offerings that affirm the underdog. Life is about finishing the race, not necessarily doing so first. Christianity is not about out-performing but is about personal obedience to God. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Moshing Floor is an upbeat rocker that makes for a good party song. It got the crowd going during the few concerts that he did do. He even left in his voice cracking on one note, which is raw and hilarious. Yes, Easy Listening does mock Barry Manilow in a way but it mocks so much more than that. It mocks the supposed sacredness of one style of music. It mocks the narrow-mindedness that not only comes to us naturally, but also affects us theologically. And it is cool reggae. Curses is a low-key alternative song with a dominant bass-line. Sock Heaven is a pop song embracing personal uniqueness and acceptance. Cash Cow is the only questionable offering here and everyone will have a take it or leave it attitude towards it. It is not something that you listen to often, perhaps only when feeling contemplative. It mocks the consumerist and materialistic culture that American Christianity has bought into. Its three acts are very different and vary in length. Some may find the specifics of his knock against tele-evangelists as being one step too far, and so there are some things here that might offend. Taylor's philosophy has often been that if it offends you, then you probably needed to be offended then. If something bothers you, then perhaps you should face that topic. He rails against hypocricy like no other and yet, he still maintains respect, which is an odd balancing act to say the least. There is no one in the Christian music industry that is more blatant and more needed that Steve Taylor. Not only is an encouraging slap on the back sometimes helpful, but so can be a disciplinary slap upside the head when it is also needed! And he continues to affirm, guide, and bless younger acts with his production talents now, and so his mark is still being made.

In 1993 Steve Taylor returned to the scene with this fun and unusual album that confused and scared the Christian critics. Songs like Jesus Is For Losers and Cash cow went against the Amero-Christian grain. Steve was once again doing what he did best.
