Product Information

BETTER LUCK TOMORROW, the first feature film from director and screenwriter Justin Lin, is a dark comedy about Asian-American high school students in suburban Los Angeles. High school student Ben Manibag (Parry Shen) is an overachiever. The polite 16-year-old does well in class, studies diligently for the SATs, works in a fast food restaurant, and is involved with extracurricular activities that will enhance his college applications. Essentially, he is an ideal Ivy League candidate. But when he is befriended by senior Daric Loo (Roger Fan)--class valedictorian and captain of the academic decathlon team--his life changes. Bit by bit Ben, his best friend Virgil (Jason Tobin), and Virgil's cousin, Han (Sung Kang), are drawn from their boring suburban high school life to Daric's increasingly risky propositions and into a world of petty crime, drugs, and sex. Eventually, the foursome's activities begin to spin out of control, culminating in shocking events that none of them could anticipate.

Better Luck Tomorrow
While undeniably humorous and consistently engaging, Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow represents all that is wrong with the fastcut, flashy new type of filmmaking. What makes it so much worse is that there is a lot going on here: it could have been a truly thoughtful and moving film about action and consequence. More recent films such as A Simple Plan and Blood Simple tackled this subect with building tension and subtle atmosphere leading to a cracking payoff. Lin piles on heaps of pizzaz as to make the film’s dark material entertaining and amusing, which generally works. The problem occurs when Lin tries to move the film from black comedy into stark, dramatic territory. An ending which is supposed to move the audience is lost in the sea of rapid-fire editing and a camera seemingly hopped ... Lin is obviously a very talented director, he just doesn't know how to use it. That said, the acting is exemplary and the film is frequently very funny, in an anti-society way. One memorable scene finds the boys piling things in a cart, returning them, and counting their cash with glee. I liked how that scene made me feel above the law without doing anything wrong. The primary theme here is acceptance, a cornerstone of many a teenager’s life. It is made more difficult for Ben and his friends due to their Asian heritage, and the myths surrounding Asian American men… And they, accordingly, take more drastic measures to disprove the stereotypes. Ben attempts to join the all-american sport of basketball, with horrible results. He makes the team only due to being Asian, and never plays. He uses alcohol and deals drugs, in an attempt to join the shady side of the American mould, and herein lies an unforgivably stupid plot hole. You snort cocaine once, maybe you can resist it again. Ben becomes a full-time addict and, after one nosebleed, kicks the habit entirely. That just doesn’t happen. Events such as these ruin the credibility of the film. The film regards goals of acceptance in “pop” society as unhealthy and a waste of time, as symbolized by Ben’s dying fish. As Ben spends more time on work and “play”, the fish, his soul, is disregarded and left to die. Powerful staement, if only the film left it at that. Instead we get a drawn out conclusion reducing an act of murder to a cool camera trick, thus distancing the viewer to the point they just don’t care about the drama. They were having too much fun.

Sung Kang
I became intrigued with the Han character from the Fast and Furious movies and discovered that the persona originated in this movie. Although, not a pleasant movie (topic wise), it does present an interesting and possibly accurate insight into a world completely foreign to the general population. Well done by the director who also did several of the Fast/Furious franchise.

Spoiled teen angst is at it again
Ok so the cheap way to some up this MTV film is to simply call it an Asian 'Boyz n da Hood'. But it would short change the cast who do alot with a cheesy script full of anger and entitlement. Their are enough laughs to hold up the more serious tone overall in this movie but I have to admit that it took a couple of tries, to get all the way to the end as 'Better Luck...' runs about twenty minutes too long. Having said that, this is a cool lowkey picture to have in your library. -seezinhaiOk so the cheap way to some up this MTV film is to simply call it an Asian 'Boyz n da Hood'.
