Great, but not all I'd hoped.
First of all, this is a great program. It offers a lot of really interesting animations that show how many of the worlds greatest constructions were put together, and some very insightful commentary that explains why they were so important to the culture being examined. However, there are a few disappointments. First of all, Engineering an Empire: Rome is not included in this boxed set. I wasn't sure whether it would be, and thought I read something that implied that it would, but I was mistaken. The second problem may not affect most of you, but certainly was for me. There are no subtitles, and no closed captioning data included on the DVD. I had been hoping the show this to a deaf family member who has an interest in history, and unfortunately was not able to.First of all, this is a great program. Nicely done and informative except...
The information and details provided in this set of DVD's was really fascinating and pretty much unknown to me before watching them and most anybody interested in this area of history/sociology/paleontology/archaeology and wonders of ancient mankind will enjoy this series. My only criticism in the set was the use of Peter Weller as narrator. He is too far out of his depth in this outing here and lacks the oratorical expertise of other, better skilled and more competent persons who might have been selected. If you can get beyond this issue, and I was able to do so, then the series can be an enjoyable visit into the past.The information and details provided in this set of DVD's was really fascinating and pretty much unknown to me before watching them and most anybody interested in this area of history/sociology/paleontology/archaeology and wonders of ancient mankind will enjoy this series. More Flash than Facts
The History Channel is always a reliable source for some of the best documentaries and educational series on television today. Not the best, but close. This series is another example of a subject that should have been dealt with much more in depth, but for the sake of accessibility by most everyone, the technical detail that was highlighted upon was very minimal. The series covers several topics in name only, with some fancy animations and dramatic re-enactments, but you are left wanting more. To be honest, the series is less about the actual execution of the architecture and engineering in these civilizations and much more about the political and lifestyle impacts they made. When viewed in this light, the series is a masterpiece. Entertaining Survey
This set surveys major engineering feats of the largest world empires of ancient times. Peter Weller gives an entertaining, if superficial, account of both the leaders of these empires and their engineering triumphs. Seeing the remains and comuter drawn blueprints is useful.

Excellent Educational Tool
I bought this for my husband, a Civil Engineer. The WHOLE family loves it and we are able to incorporate it in our homeschool curriculum with our 7 and 9 year old daughters. Caution: includes some shockingly graphic scenes that aren't really essential to the information.
