Product Information

This Pentax SMC DA lens is designed to work specifically with digital SLR cameras. Equipped with a focal length equivalent to 60 mm in 35 mm format, the 40 mm f/2.8 lens is ultra compact because of the pancake-style design, and light with a weight of only 3.2 oz. This Pentax lens is treated with Super Protect (SP) coating for maximum light transmission, sharp definition, and high-contrast images. The advanced optical design used on the Pentax SMC DA lens provides high-resolution optics with minimal aberrations while the Quick Shift Focus System allows for instant toggling between autofocus and manual focus modes. With this 40 mm f/2.8 lens, users can take advantage of the 39-degree angle of view and minimum focus distance of 15.7 inches, as well as a 49 mm filter size. The maximum reproduction ratio for the Pentax lens is 1:7.69 and the lens has nine diaphragm blades. The size of the Pentax lens is approximately 2.5 inches by 0.6 inches, making it very easy to carry attached to a camera or in a camera bag.

    Fastest focus, extreme sharpness, smallest! High quality A++++

    I bought this product because it´s price and aperture point. A 35mm lens allow you to make photos in the same size eyes see. With 40mm allow you to zoom in just a bit and this makes that photo doesn´t change in composition but in focusing the motive. Positive things are the acurate focus, and extremely fast movement. The hood comes with objective, it is metall made. There is a screw cap in front-front, pretty small, that screws into the hood, and another screw that is the hood 49mm screew for filters etc. "Negative" things, if there is any. It is the size. It is so small that if you want to focus manualy we are not used to manage so little lenses. For me that is the only inconvenient, wich is solved in this way. In autofocus you can turn the focus-ring smothly without forcing anything, ...

    Excellent, inexpensive prime for DLSR Pentax

    This is one of Pentax's 'pancake' lenses and when you hold one in your hand, you'll see why they call them that. This is an ultra small, fixed focal length prime. It is about 1/2 or 1/3 the size of my 50mm fixed af. Great if you want a light weight travel lens. Being one of the 'limited' lenses means that the glass in this unit is a little better than the run of the mill DA line. Good color rendition. Sharp often even up to way open. I would happily recommend this lens to others.

    Pentax smc DA 40mm f/2.8 Lens

    Pros: Size and weight Warm colors Very sharp from f4 A little soft wide-open but nothing disturbing, more on the good side with portraits in available light Fast focusing (although a little noisy) Excellent for low profile street photography Nice, sturdy metal&glass feel and behaviour (but preferably do not drop this little gem) No internal motor that could eventually break Cons: Strange lens hood, easy to loose, better use a normal lens cap and a classic hood and leave the original in the box Manual focus possible but not very user friendly compared with Pentax K, M, A - but, hey, this is an AF lens!

    Battery is a little stingy

    Double AA batteries are seemingly drained when using them with this camera but when I checked the voltage the batteries were fine. It's not a big deal for me though since I'm just learning to do photography and I figured a cheaper option would be the way to go before I get a full grip on things. Other than that, it's great value for what I paid. I may get a lithium battery pack but as I get a handle on this camera over a few more months I'm sure I'll want to buy a new camera anyway.

    My favorite lens

    Absolutely my GO TO sharpest lens, most lightweight, most compact, most durable, most convenient, and one of the lowest priced lenses in my bag. I don't need a lens cover, the opening glass is only about 1.5cm so chance of scratching is minimal and just put a uv filter over it and you won't ever be searching in your pockets for a lens cover. People are always asking what kind of lens is that, is that a DSLR, etc. If you want to take better and sharper photographs, start with this prime lens.
