my first Keene novel, but not my last
I have just discovered what a number of folks, both here on eBay and everywhere else have known for years: Brian Keene writes well, has a muscular imagination, and crafts plot details with verve. His take on mythological horror in Dark Hollow did indeed remind me of early King or Campbell. However, any unfavorable comparison, i.e., 'he's too much like them', is just way off base. The folksiness of his supporting characters, their utter believability, supports and forwards the narrative while he builds the pace with moderation. I thoroughly enjoyed the progression, and found the ending fit nicely. I will be reading Conqueror Worm, Dead Sea and Ghost Walk shortly. This author is worth checking out. Doesn't take it as far as Ed Lee, doesn't nancy about with the vulgar bits, either. ... After two miscarriages, writer Adam Senft's marriage is on the rocks, and his only satisfaction comes from his bond with his dog, Big Steve. One day, on a walk through local woods rumored to be haunted, man and dog come across a strange sight: a woman performing fellatio on a statue of a satyr—which comes to life and sees them. Soon, all the women in town begin disappearing, summoned to the woods by the satyr's hypnotic piping. When Adam gathers the menfolk to hunt down the satyr and retrieve the women, what they uncover is an unholy evil bent on protecting itself and spreading its seed. Dark Hollow by Brian Keene
I really enjoyed this book. It didn't mince words. Brian Keene knows how to write a book that seems so realistic that you feel it must have actually happened. His imagination is runs really deep. I enjoy books that make you "Think" and keeps you completely off guard. There were some rather disturbing parts in the book however that is what made it so realistic and believable. After reading this book I bought several more of his and have really enjoyed them as well.I really enjoyed this book. It didn't mince words.
