Jamie Foxx stars in this biopic of legendary soul and R&B singer Ray Charles. Skillfully edited and with a keen eye for period detail, the narrative weaves in and out of the past in an interlocking tapestry of the man's rise to fame in the 1950s and '60s. Growing up poor, black, and blind in the rural south, Charles learns--under the tutelage of his tough-love mother (Sharon Warren)--to turn these handicaps into assets. With this training, Ray eventually plays his way into a major deal with Paramount records and earns icon status as an American legend. Along the way, the high cost of fame leads him to engage in abusive relationships, manipulative behavior, and struggles with drug and alcohol problems. This is a dynamite film for the music alone (Charles's actual recordings are used in the film), but Foxx's career-benchmark performance transcends RAY's biopic roots, turning this into a piercing, full-on character study: unflinching, sometimes harrowing, and ultimately deeply moving. The sheer joy of Charles's music comes alive in Foxx's movements, and his character matures convincingly and powerfully. A stellar supporting cast is on hand to back him up every step of the way, including Larenz Tate as producer Quincy Jones, and Kerry Washington as Ray's long-suffering wife, Regina.

THE BEST BIO EVER MADE
Jamie Foxx proved himself to be an actor, not just a commedian (sp?). The story is excellent. I had no idea Ray Charles went trough all that. I am 37. Always known the name and music, but never the story behind it. Jamie Foxx made himself a movie legend with this role. I don't think I have ever seen better acting. To play a blind piano player and singer and make it TOTALLY believeable, awesome.Jamie Foxx proved himself to be an actor, not just a commedian (sp?). The story is excellent. Ray Excellence In Art.
The movie Ray is a lasting testimony and tribute to both the musical excellence and the character flaws of Ray Charles! With certainty this was a testimony to the humanity of all of us. No matter who we are, we all have skills that can propel us to greatness but can also place us in jeopardy. What I really loved was that this was not some cushy and fluffy depiction of a great man and musical icon. It showed that despite extreme poverty, physical disabilities, deplorable conditions of the times we live in, Ray made his dreams come true and so can we! I am guilty, as many of us, of seeing only one side of this musical genius! I have learned so much about the man. Some of it was shocking and some of it was so amazing that at the end of the movie I was wanting to know more about Mr Charles. ... Yet, of all his acting projects; Miami Vice, The Player's Club, etc..., his performance as Ray Charles catapults his into the mega star realm of Denzel Washington, Robert Redford, Al Pacino, Billy D Williams, etc... At times it was so difficult to determine was it Ray or Jamie singing that it was both frustrating and amazing. Twenty-five thumbs up to all who were involved with the making of this classic.

EXCELLENT IS PUTTING IT MIDLY
This movie is fantastic! It is great! Thank goddness Ray Charles got to see it himself before he passed away. This is truly Jamie Fox at his finest. He actually brought us into Ray Charle's life. It was as if I was there. It is one of the best movies you will ever watch. If you haven't seen it yet, you need to get this one. The only complaint is the use of the word God Dxxx, I think they could have left that one out. I really do not like that.That is why I didn't give it an excellent rating. So parents beware, other than that. It's a good movie. I think parents should watch this alone before knowing rather they would like there kids to watch it, because some of the scences and language.hope this helps!This movie is fantastic! It is great! OUTSTANDING! whether you love the music or not - you'll love this
A bittersweet bio-pic of legendary gospel/r&b singer Ray Charles. I was immediately drawn into the story of Charles’ youth. The now, Oscar winning performance of FOXX, was not unexpected. When I saw this movie in the theatre I left knowing that he was Oscar-bound! FOXX is a triple threat: dramatic/comedic acting; singing; playing piano + an active standup! He was probably at least, in some part born to play this role – which he does quite magnificently. Because the real Mr. Charles had a hands-on role is guiding Mr. Foxx in this role, it was made even more authentic.
