Let me start this saying I'm a huge ELO fan. I bought all 4 versions of this album (LP, standard CD, deluxe US CD, and this Japanese Deluxe CD). It's well worth the price, just for the bonus tracks alone. If you can't find the Japanese version, then get the US/UK deluxe version, as it has 2 of the 3 bonus tracks that are on this Japanese version. Out of the 3 bonus tracks, "Blue" is my favorite, and should have been included on the standard CD and the LP. Honestly, my only complaint about this album is it's too short. There's not a song the breaks the 4 minute mark, and some don't break the 3 minute mark. A couple of the tracks would have benefitted by being a tad longer. But I understand that Jeff Lynne realizes that most people's attention span these days is very short. But ... Let me start this saying I'm a huge ELO fan. But especially the first track "When I Was A Boy", would have benefitted with possibly a 3rd verse and final chorus, but rather than that it ends with a single line of lyrics following the guitar solo. Another track, the title song "Alone In The Universe" which is the last track on the standard versions, should have had a longer fade out, with a little more ad libbing, etc. With that being said...this is an amazing album. Some of the bonus tracks that have been issued on other ELO albums in the past few years, have not thrilled me that much (such as "Cold Feet" from the album "Electric Light Orchestra Live", and "One Day" from the reissue of "Zoom"). But this album, is solid from beginning to end. There's not a bad song...and that includes the three bonus tracks on this Japanese version. Besides the aforementioned "Blue", I think the best tracks are "When I Was A Boy", "One Step At A Time", and "Alone In The Universe". Other notable songs are "When The Night Comes", "The Sun Will Shine On You" and "Ain't It A Drag". Here's the deal though...if you're expecting this to sound like the 1970's albums "Face The Music", "A New World Record" or "Out Of The Blue", then you'll be disappointed. Jeff's long since tired of the grandiose string arrangements, and only about 3 songs on this album feature strings. The songs on this album sound more like songs from 1979's "Discovery" and the 1980's albums "Time", "Secret Message" and "Balance of Power" with a little of 2001's "Zoom" thrown in. If you're not a die-hard ELO fan, then you may be wondering about why it's called "Jeff Lynne's ELO". There are several reasons. Jeff decided to drop the long version ("Electric Light Orchestra") partly because he doesn't do the "Orchestrations" much any more, and also to make it clear that he is part of this version. The reason for this is...in the late 1980's when ELO broke up. The band's then drummer Bev Bevan made a deal with Jeff so he could use the name Electric Light Orchestra Part 2. Obviously, Jeff was not part of this band. But true ELO fans know that Jeff wrote all the songs, sang lead, played the majority of the instruments and produced all the albums. So, this new version "Part 2" was missing the most important ingredient...Jeff Lynne. Often concert promoters would mis-bill the band as simply "Electric Light Orchestra" or "ELO", and fans would expect to see Jeff Lynne fronting the band, when he wasn't a part of this version. So, to make absolutely sure everyone knows that Jeff's part of this band, he changed the name to "Jeff Lynne's ELO". Also...none of the former members of any previous version of ELO play on this album. In fact, Jeff Lynne plays all the instruments and vocals, except for a few percussion bits played by his engineer Steve Jay, and some backing vocals by Jeff's daughter Laura. You call it how you see it. If you think this is a Jeff Lynne solo effort...then that's your opinion, but I for one see it as much of an ELO album as any other ELO album in their 13 album catalog.
