  • Buy this mic no matter what your needs are. Buy two or more if you can.

This mic has several different options with the rolling pickup pattern wheel on the front. It has generally great response, and a very extended low-end. I also appreciate the added features of a hi-pass filter and a db reduction pad which genuinely make a difference in the overall sound of each source. I can honestly say, the omni position has been very helpful with drums and orchestral capture. I have recorded a piano in mid-side with great results, and the cardioid pattern sounds fantastic on most sources. I do recommend buying two at one time. This added many options to my arsenal. The negative: omni pattern has a noticeable brightness to it; this thing pulls power, and as a result, brings out the worst in interfaces with unstable phantom power. Whatever you are trying to capture, ...

  • Excellent mic for toms on drum kit

I did a ton of research on the web regarding best microphone for using on toms on a drum kit. CAD M179 kept being mentioned, and demonstrated on YouTube. It was the exact, open sound I was looking for. I found three related mics on eBay: M37 and M177 (both out of production) and the M179. All of them are excellent for toms. The M179 is especially good, as it's multi pattern capability provides a hypercardioid setting which helps with rejecting cymbals and other drums.

  • CAD M179 is perfect for toms

This mic has become very well known for use on toms on a drum kit. I switched from dynamic mics to these condensers and they are excellent for that purposes. Big, open, articulate sound. And the M179 has lots of patterns to choose from, including hypercardioid which is perfect for this application.

  • Superb irrespective of price

I’ve done live recording for years. These CAD M179 mics are very versatile. For reference I also have and use Shure SM81s , Audio Technica AT4050s, Shure KSM 27s and Sennheiser Mk4s. A few points: - the CADs have very low “self noise” - the CADs have continuously variable polar patterns which is very useful - the CADs have a very transparent, but not overly bright, clean sound - the CADs are neutral with very minimal sonic coloration If you use mics for coloration (sonic signature) you might be disappointed. If you want a very low noise, clean and neutral condenser mic, these are really good, regardless of price. By the way, these were originally designed and made in the US but are now made in China. All my Shures are older US made, the ATs were made in Japan and the Sennheiser. ...

  • cheap and excellent

I bought 2 M179 after a shout out in gearslutz, where it was one of my favorite, among expensive microphones. I wasn't disappointed because they are quite similar in sound, and more similar than a oktava matched pair I bought in the same time. Hi frequencies aren't as present as in KSM44, and it's for me a quality. I hope people who build this cheap and good microphone is respected, if not, I present my apologies.
