Product Information

Malcolm Lee, director of upbeat family fare such as WELCOME HOME ROSCOE JENKINS and ROLL BOUNCE, takes a slightly raunchier tack for his uproarious buddy comedy, SOUL MEN. The late Bernie Mac gives one of his final performances as Floyd Henderson, a retired back-up singer for a ‘60s soul act known as the Real Deal. When the group's lead singer, Marcus Hooks--played by real-life soul singer John Legend--suddenly drops dead, the two remaining members of the group, Henderson and Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson), are enlisted to play a tribute concert at the Apollo Theatre in New York City. Hinds, an ex-convict trying his best to stay out of the limelight, is persuaded by Henderson to drive cross-country for the chance to re-ignite his music career. The classic comedic trope of road-trip antagonism reaches new heights as the pair curse and claw at each other for the entire voyage, taking occasional breaks to stage impromptu roadside rehearsals and other, less PG-rated misadventures. Throughout, Mac's formidable skills at slapstick play against Jackson's no-nonsense, tough guy demeanor--a veneer that, at times, cracks enough to reveal some genuinely tender moments between the two. But SOUL MEN's final, most poignant postscript is a cameo by fallen soul legend Isaac Hayes--who, coincidentally, died the same week as Bernie Mac--casting a bittersweet pall over the film's enjoyably comic shenanigans.

With Louis conveniently afraid of flying, the two agree to drive cross country from L.A. to New York in what else but a classic convertible, a staple of the road genre. A concatenation of calamities invariably ensues en route, and the plot thickens when our heroes rendezvous with Cleo (Sharon Leal), an aspiring-singer who might be the long-lost daughter of one of them. Cleo accepts their offer to join the group and the trio arrives at the Apollo with the paternity issue conveniently being resolved right on time to give dearly-departed Marcus a glorious sendoff. Shamelessly borrowing elements from The Blues Brothers, Thelma & Louise and Trains, Planes and Automobiles and other buddy flicks, this rollicking road comedy makes up for its lack of originality with an earthy enthusiasm and infectious energy likely to endear it with any audience. Another plus is the sense of nostalgia generated by the movie's postscript affectionately acknowledging the passing of both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.You'll laugh here and there at the outrageous antics of Bernie and Sam, given their screen chemistry and larger than life personas. This movie was irony personified. The story of the Real Deal road tripping to NYC to pay respects to their former band mate...and then losing two very fine performers shortly afterwards. Bernie and Isaac, your works live on to entertain generations to come. I have to say that I loved the soundtrack and it took me back to my school days. All those classic tunes and dance steps. Perfect! The comedy was classic Bernie Mac, takes you back to the days of Players Club, you will laugh so hard! For all fans of R & B and especially of Bernie Mac, this is a must see!This movie was irony personified. My review
Very fast delivery but cannot view the special clips, added features...just the movie. Movie freezes up a couple of times.

Soul Men (DVD 2009)
We really enjoyed the movie. The storyline was believable. It was great to see Bernie Mac do what he do... The chemistry between Bernie and Samuel L Jackson was natural. It was as if the director said: lights, camera, action and just let the two of them define how the movie would go. For mature audiences only due to language and violence.due to language and small amount of violance.
