George Stevens' life-altering experience of witnessing the death camps after WWII was doubtless responsible for his desire to adapt the famed diary of the teenaged Jewish girl, played by Millie Perkins. With the feared 'Green Police' or Dutch Gestapo combing Amsterdam in search of Jews, Anne, her parents, Otto (Joseph Schildkraut) and Edith (Anna Huber) another Jewish family, the Van Daans, and a dentist Albert Dussell (Ed Wynn) take refuge for two years in a small attic provided by Gentile shop owners Kraler (Douglas Spencer) and Miep (Dody Heath). Despite their precarious situation, and the sense of claustrophobia created by having to live together in such crowded conditions, covering the windows during the day, and keeping as quiet as possible at all times, the families carry on as best they can. For Anne, her platonic romance with Peter Van Daan (Richard Beymer), the attractive son of often voluble parents, makes the experience more bearable than it is for the adults, whose sense of foreboding is palpable. By surrounding the inexperienced Perkins with a talented cast of veteran performers, which also includes Shelley Winters and Lou Jacobi, Stevens achieves a moving portrait of Frank's innocent precocity, with her ultimate fate the tragic subtext of this intensely compelling film.

A Jewish Girl's Documentary of Hiding Out During WWII - Wonderful!
The true story written in the diary of a young girl living through the holocaust of WWII in Amsterdam. Going into hiding when she is 13 years old with both her family and a family that are friends of her father's - all living together in terror of being caught by the Nazi's in an attic space above a small factory. The diary itself is a great read and very insightful in spite of being written by a teenager and the movie is worth seeing because it is a good representation of all the nuances that are in the diary. Anne makes it so real and personal. It's a different take on that tragic time than the blood & guts prisoner of war movies show. As it is for so many 13 year old girls, Anne's father is her rock and with her mother they're not as comfortable and a ... As it is for so many 13 year old girls, Anne's father is her rock and with her mother they're not as comfortable and a little difficult. It's when they first stand in their new "hiding place" that her father gives her the diary - a gift that thrills her. He gives her a pen and she begins writing right off and continues through the duration of their stay. It isn't fair to tell the story that tells itself. The camera work must have been a real feat in the cramped attic quarters. It's good they included shots of the outside world and the activity that was going on - including the fires and raids - out the attic window. That is where they lived for two years. Although the time frame is from the 1940's, the viewpoints of a young teenage girl still stand as what seems true now (in general). I'm a fan of the diary and the movie. It's more than merely being Anne's thoughts as time goes by - it's a reminder of how Hitler and Germany swept through Europe and what horror they spread along the way. It's a time I firmly believe everyone should know about. It's something we can only hope will never happen again.

Timely story
With all the people promoting BDS against Isreal, and those claiming the holocaust never happened, it is an important reminder that the Jews of Europe were very nearly exterminated during WWII. I like this particular story because it engages the viewer in the characters being discriminated against. The movie came out in 1956, a short 10 years after the end of the war. I bought this for my 12 year old granddaughter. Always a great movie with historical value. Sad that this was how Jewish people had to live during the Holocaust. I’m happy to have it in my collection.
