Oligarchs on a galactic scale…
The story of a girl who did not know she was somehow part of a dynasty of the wealthiest people in the galaxy owning planets like some people that rent storage units... SPOILER: the planets are actually nurtured to cause great population growth which at a certain point would trigger a “harvest” of all the beings to give greater longevity to the oligarchs. A truly original concept!
I cannot fathom the lukewarm reviews this film earned. It has a great cast, fabulous design, excellent score, and something we don’t see so often in sci-fi since the novels of the early days of sci-fi: a unique concept. When I first saw this in a theater, my reaction was, “Meh.” On second viewing, I realized the designers had really extended themselves. The subtle interplay of reactions between the performers was entrancing. The movie’s only shortcoming was some abrupt editing. Jupiter Ascending is a visual feast!!!
I like Sci-Fi for the CGI, costumes, set, props, etc. and Jupiter Ascending nails it on all accounts. The characters are engaging/apropos for a Sci-Fi action film with a wide array of personality types. The idea that Earth is owned by one person is a bit ridiculous and woefully egocentric, but the social/political commentary is spot on. Normally Mila Kunis is annoying, but she presents a well rounded performance that almost makes you forget you are watching the actress Mila Kunis. Channing Tatum is his usual hotness, though I'd have liked his character to be more of a smart ass. The film does not feel to lag really as the "tender" and "thoughtful" moments are relatively brief and accurately human. Ignore the mainstream critics! (remember how they rated The Matrix?)
If action sci-fi is your thing, you need to see this movie. IMHO it's as good as most of the super hero movies that are popular today. Plenty of special effects, lots of action and several interesting characters. My only complaint would be that sometimes the action is moving so fast, I wish they'd used more of the slow motion effects. Until I looked at the stills, I didn't realize that I'd missed details that add to the story. I'm glad I bought the DVD and now wish I'd seen it on the big screen too.If action sci-fi is your thing, you need to see this movie.
