Synopsis
A new collection from David Sedaris is cause for jubilation. His recent move to Paris has inspired hilarious pieces, including Me Talk Pretty One Day, about his attempts to learn French. His family is another inspiration. You Cant Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers and cashiers with 6-inch fingernails. Compared by The New Yorker to Twain and Hawthorne, Sedaris has become one of our best-loved authors. Sedaris is an amazing reader whose appearances draw hundreds, and his performancesincluding a jaw-dropping impression of Billie Holiday singing I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weinerare unforgettable. Sedariss essays on living in Paris are some of the funniest hes ever written. At last, someone even meaner than the French! The sort of blithely sophisticated, loopy humour that might have resulted if Dorothy Parker and James Thurber had had a love child. Entertainment Weekly on Barrel Fever Sidesplitting Not one of the essays in this new collection failed to crack me up; frequently I was helpless. The New York Times Book Review on Naked

    • Lovely self-deprecating humor.

David Sedaris is the only author that has ever really made me laugh out aloud as I was reading his books. Me Talk Pretty One Day was no exception. Each story of either his childhood, teengage years, or adulthood all flowed and went into each other nicely. Even he didn't keep to his life's "order" - they all created this web of storytelling I am in awe of. Just as Sedaris' stories speak so much in his real voice on the radio program - "This American Life" - I find myself enjoying reading the words on the page just as much as hearing his voice speak them. If anything I absorb them better in print...but that may just be me. Overall, a wonderful, lovely piece of literature that I would no feel guiltly in claiming to have devoured most readily.

    • Another hysterical, gut-busting read by Sedaris

Anything by David Sedaris is going to be a good read, but this book (by the author of Naked, Holidays on Ice) is one of the best. In it, Sedaris discusses his anxiety-ridden childhood (he was sent to the speech teacher as a kid because of his lisp, which he says is more related to his sexual orientation), a horrifying event over the holidays (a turd would NOT allow itself to be flushed down the toilet), and a few other choice moments, like learning French as an adult. The book is arranged in short vignettes that allow you to read front to back, or you can skip around if you wish. It is typical Sedaris satire and self-loathing combined with funny anecdotes about life. If you're easily offended, this probably isn't the book for you. If you love to laugh and consider any topic game for ...

    • Very happy with a book full of laughs
