À propos de ce produit

Product Information

This book gives a detailed account of the Standard Model of particle physics, focusing on the techniques by which the model can produce information about real observed phenomena. It opens with a pedagogic account of the theory of the Standard Model. Introductions to the essential calculational techniques are included. The major part of the text is concerned with the use of the Standard Model in the calculation of physical properties of particles. Rigorous and reliable methods (radiative corrections and nonperturbative techniques based on symmetries and anomalies) are emphasized, but other useful models (such as the quark and Skyrme models) are also described. The strong and electroweak interactions are not treated as independent threads but rather are woven together into a unified phenomenological fabric. Many exercises and diagrams are included.

Reviews
"...a welcome addition. Their text concentrates on how the basic theory can be connected to the observable real world....will fill in a gap in...the existing literature available to the particle physics community." A.D. Martin, Journal of Physics G, 'There is a wealth of material here. If you want to find out what is the strong CP problem or the OZI rule, or what understanding there is at present of heavy quark life-times of the Delta I = 1/2 rule, you will find the answers here in a relatively accessible form, and much else besides.'Contemporary Physics, "...provides a clear concise formulation of the theory and then goes through the application of the theory to most of the important experimental results to which it can be applied." L. Wolfenstein, Foundations of Physics, 'There is a wealth of material here. If you want to find out what is the strong CP problem or the OZI rule, or what understanding there is at present of heavy quark life-times of the Delta I = 1/2 rule, you will find the answers here in a relatively accessible form, and much else besides.' Contemporary Physics, 'The history is thrilling and illustrates wonderfully the deep interdependence of experiment and theory ...'Science, 'The history is thrilling and illustrates wonderfully the deep interdependence of experiment and theory …' Science, 'The history is thrilling and illustrates wonderfully the deep interdependence of experiment and theory ...' In fact, I think you will too, if you are interested in the details of the standard model. This book devotes a lot of attention to aspects of the standard model that require an understanding of its dynamics and not merely its symmetries. These issues are very important for researchers, and the book is destined to become both a valuablereference for them and a text that can be used in advanced courses in particle physics." Steven Gottlieb, Physics Today, "...certainly a good resource for a worker in the field....a valuable reference book in a graduate particle physics course." Mary K. Gaillard, American Journal of Physics
