Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is what is known in the legal world as a "fixer," or in the character's own pejorative version, a "janitor" who cleans up legal messes for VIPs and corporations on behalf of a prestigious New York City law firm. A former litigator, Clayton has found a niche that capitalizes on his legal acumen and shrewd people skills, and yet, after 13 years on the job, finds himself increasingly disgusted with his clientele. The film covers four pivotal days of his life, in which a midlife crisis and a crisis of conscience neatly converge when he is called in to "fix" a situation unfolding in one of his firm's hottest cases. Brilliant lawyer Arthur Edens (another powerhouse performance by Tom Wilkinson), representing a huge agro-chemical corporation being hit by a class action suit, has a bipolar breakdown, compounded by guilt over his defense of a company that is probably in the wrong, but is wealthy enough to buy its innocence either way. The company's CEO (Tilda Swinton) will stop at nothing to keep Edens from sinking the case. Clayton must decide how much of Edens's mad rebellion against the company is sheer mental illness, how much is true, and how much it will cost him to do the right thing.Clooney delivers a rich performance as a hangdog and haunted man who wants to stay on the side of good, but is a little too skilled at moral margin-walking to make that an easy choice in every situation. Swinton glows as a secretly frail Amazon who somehow won't let a tortured conscience prevent her from getting ahead. The final third of the film is as suspenseful as any courtroom drama, without ever resorting to legal-thriller cliches.

    Michael Clayton (2008, DVD) Full Screen Edition

    If you like the early style of John Grisham {he doesn't have anything to do with this movie that I know of} you will LOVE this movie. I usually buy the Widescreen format but thought this one would be OK in Full Screen, I was right. George Clooney does a very good job in this. The STAR is Tilda Swinton who won an Oscar for her performance in this movie. Tom Wilkinson plays the part of the top lawyer who has gone from advocate to whistleblower very well. Can Clooney's character clean up the mess? I'll leave that for you to find out.... Over all 8.5 Stars of 10

    A dark, involving, unblinking suspense/drama very well done.

    The nuances of the characters and their interactions are displayed with clarity and depth. This is a powerful movie with an atmospheric tone that allows you to both observe and feel as if you are there as events unfold to a surprising and satisfying climax.

    Michael Clayton

    This movie is so well written and intricate, I still find it hard to believe that it is based on an original screenplay and not one adapted from something like a John Grisham novel. Gilroy's gift for thick-rooted reality gives the movie a feeling of credibility and also serves as a stage for some of the most slick, well-written dialogues of a recent movie. Also, the movie four major players do just such incredibly fantastic jobs in their roles, it truly is remarkable. An entertaining, thrilling ride into legal intricacies, well-written dialogue and great acting make this a highly recommended movie for those who aren't afraid to think.

    Michael Clayton

    I did like this movie. Compared to all of the hype, I was a little disappointed. Only because I was expecting more. George Clooney was very good. He did play a character that was different then normal for him. He usually plays charming, cute, smart men that always wins. This guy was someone new for him and he did very well playing him. The story line was also very interesting.

    At last, a film for adults! I am tired of Hollywoods penchant for marketing and making movies for the supposedly all important 20 to 29 demographic. Michael Clayton is a serious movie for people who enjoy thinking about real events, and the real world. Given that this is the directors first turn at directing, all I can say is "Bravo!" This movie also turned me into a George Clooney fan, his film presence is impeccable with this character. So my bias is clear, great film for people who want to be engrossed by a story with real characters.
