1964 & '73 Indy 500 Highlight films
At one time each year ESPN showed old highlight films of the Indy 500 from 1951 - 1963. This CHALLENGE OF INDY dvd fills in the next year 1964 which was historically tragic. It does not dwell on the MacDonald/Sachs fatal accident but on qualifying and the race itself. 1973 was also an historically tragic and rain shortened year at Indy. But Indy is a three-hour endurance sport with the skill level of Olympic downhill skiing. Every racing driver knows (and I used to race, actually over in Japan back in 1984) that each year 36,000 Americans are killed in their automobiles not doing much more than going to and from work and never got to compete at Olympic skill level with 32 of their best friends. What racing was like 50 to 60 years ago!
This DVD covers two very exciting Indy 500 races. The films were made in the mid-60's and early 70's so the pictures and sound is not up to today's standards, but the action will keep you engaged. There may be drivers names you haven't heard of for many years - A.J. Foyt, Al & Bobby Unser, Jim Clark, Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, etc. When you see the safety measures they had in the mid-60's compared to what they have now, it is a wonder any of the drivers survived! The second DVD covers the 12 Hours of Sebring. You will enjoy the Ford GT versus Jim Hall's Chaparral, Ford Cobra versus Ferrari, etc. Great race and it is interesting to see what the race and track was like then. You will not be sorry with this DVD unless you do not like racing!This DVD covers two very exciting Indy 500 races.
