Author Ron Knapp explores the life of our nation's nineteenth president, Rutherford B. Hayes. As president, Hayes believed his most important job in the White House was to finish uniting the country during the Reconstruction period after the Civil War. He paid serious attention to the problems of African Americans and wanted them to be treated fairly. After his term ended, he continued to show his support for African Americans by serving on the scholarship board at Ohio State University, which offered aid to all deserving students.
