A very nice ebook reader
I bought the Kindle Keyboard because I don't have a lot of space to store books. I love the sharp screen, superb, and the features to modify font size and screen orientation. Set up is fairly easy, you name the product and register it on amazon, and then you input your wireless network (in my case, broadband home network). This model does not have the 3G option. Dowloading books to the Kindle from the Amazon site is easy, although I prefer to do it from my laptop rather than from the kindle, as it is a more joyful experience. Amazon has a good choice, also a good number of free paperbacks, classic etc. You can also download 'out of copywright' books kept in Internet libraries to your PC and transfer them to your kindle in Mobi format. Personal documents and Pdf files can be tranferred by sending an email to a free service at yourusername@kindle.com. It will then show up on your kindle. Amazon will store a copy of your downloaded books on its sites (although it will not store personal documents or documents copied over) so if you accidentally delete a book, you can redownload it. After a while, you probably have more books than you can read in a lifetime, but it is nice to have them, portable, in one place. Since I use it to read, I switch off the wireless network as it consumes the battery, and only switch the reader on when I read. In this way, so far, the battery lasted about 3 weeks before needing a charge. As you read, your can access an inbuilt dictionary, and also comments by other people if you are that way inclined(with wireless on). Reading takes a while to get used to. I found the best way to read is to have it in landscape mode, because you have more characters to read per line. In portrait, each line seems too short. The disadvantage with landscape is that you only see 1/3 of a page at a time. One irritating thing is that the page does not automatically show the page number you're at,only the percentage of the book you have read. You have to press the menu button to call up page number. In addition, you can go to a location in the book, such as cover, beginning and end, or specific page. If, however, you want to go back to a chapter because you forgot some info, and you don't know which one, you can't leaf through the book... You can jump from chapter to chapter, but you are a bit disorientated. The internet facility is not a joy, but you can get subscriptions to periodicals etc, although I have not tried it. Big personal documents with tables (e.g. in Word) can be easily transferred by email, but you cannot navigate them well, precisely because you can't easily know which page you want to go to. All in all, I love this product. I cannot compare it to others because I have not explored the others in depth. My choice was made by knowing Amazon, and knowing the wide availability of books they have. I don't know if other readers do the same.

It does the job of replacing paperback books admirably.
Had read a lot about the Kindle before I bought one. It has done everything I expected. The screen is easy to read in all conditions of natural light or in the dark with a clip on LED. Very easy on the eye with the abillity to change text size too. Books are easy to download from Amazon, or if bought on Ebay, just cut and pasted onto the Kindle. PDF is not so good but other epub formats work OK or can be easily reformatted. Its a shame the charges lead is not a normal mini USB lead like my Android phone (also with the Kindle software on for reading the Kindle books) and its not possible to organise collections on the computer and transfer to the Kindle, you have to do it on the Kindle Screen. I love it - easy to use - even for technophobes!
I love it. Its really easy to set up and use. No problems downloading books, so far I've only used the 'free' books from Amazon so it's really economical for me as i am a voracious reader! It will be perfect for holidays as i usually take at least six books away with me and still have to search out the lending libraries!! The letters on the keypad are a bit small for those like me who need reading glasses but the adjustable text size more than compensates for that. I love the leather case it came with and the portable light works great too. My Mum has got her eye on it and my son wants one for when he is posted overseas so I have to keep it hidden!! It was also obvious that should I require a selection of reading material on holiday, for instance, I was looking at carrying bulk and maybe making the wrong choice of books as well. So I gave up wondering and just bought the Kindle. Now I don’t have to make the choice of which books to take because they all go with me. Brilliant! Why a Kindle and why this model? As I didn’t know anything about e-book readers I did a bit of research to find out what the market had to offer with particular emphasis on other purchasers comments. The consensus was that although they were all ... Why I bought it. As I didn’t know anything about e-book readers I did a bit of research to find out what the market had to offer with particular emphasis on other purchasers comments. The consensus was that although they were all good in different ways, the Kindle seemed to hold peoples affections more. In fact, the Kindle was the only e-book reader I had heard of before starting my research and, with the Amazon name behind it, I decided it was the brand to go for – but which model? At the time of purchase, the new model with virtual keyboards was available, which makes it more compact, but I decided to go for the keyboard version 3. My decision was really made by the type of books I would have on the reader – mostly reference books of various sorts. With this type of book it was evident I would often be making numerous notes; therefore the PC type physical keyboard would be better suited for my purposes. It has a shift key allowing me to quickly toggle between lower and upper case. A symbol key allows me to bring up a selection box for all punctuation requirements, which are easily and quickly entered into the text. The later version, on the other hand, has 5 virtual keyboards for the following: lower case, UPPER case, lower case with accentuations, UPPER case with accentuations and symbols. To navigate, the four-sided cursor key is used and switching between keyboards is necessary to include all the correct characters. For someone who reads novels the keyboard use would probably be minimal, so this would not be a problem but for me, I felt it would be a drawback. My choice has proved correct. Had the touch screen version been available in the UK, I may well have gone for that instead. A couple of other advantages of the Keyboard over the later version is the storage capacity and the longer time between battery charges. But, at the end of the day, it’s all a matter of personal choice. As far as the reading experience is concerned, I think it’s fantastic. The e-ink screen is not back-lit so it doesn’t tire your eyes, even after hours of use. It has 8 different font sizes and 3 typefaces. There are 3 different line spacing’s and 3 options for the number of words on each line. It also has text to speech, whereby you can have the book read to you. Unfortunately, the voice is still a bit robotic, so I rarely use this feature. The orientation of the book can be changed from portrait to landscape as desired and I find the latter to be better. Whenever you decide to leave off reading, just switch off the reader. When next you switch it on, it will return to the exact same spot you left it. Marvellous! You can also make notes as you read, of which the reader keeps a list with the location of each. There are so many good things about this, a number of which I’ve not yet made use of or maybe even found. There is absolutely nothing about this reader I dislike.

The best electronic purchase this year. I brought this product because I was intreagued by eBook readers and I have a few friends with Kindles who would recommend buying one. It's been over a month since I brought mine and I really can't fault it. It's got a two month battery life, although if your using the Kindle store the battery will run out about 4 weeks after a full charge. The kindle store has over two million books and downloading them is very easy and takes less than a minute from purchase to opening the first page. There are many cheap/free books at good quality so I enjoy exploring new genres. The buttons to turn pages are on either side of the device and are 6cm in size. This is perfect because I don't find myself fiddling with little side buttons. The keypad is well made and ... The best electronic purchase this year.
