The Sinking of the USS Scorpion - the real story
A great book written by an investigative writer and newspaper editor who did his "homework" before writing this book. The writer gives irrefutable evidence that the USS SCORPION was sunk by a Soviet nuclear sub. It took years of research to flesh out the details of the sinking. Statements by U.S. Naval personnel who were tasked with finding the sunken sub; statements by the soviets and events that indicated the U.S. Navy knew the sub was sunk within hours of the sinking... all show a vast cover-up to protect spying information that could not be released to the public. The information was so dangerous that it could have lead to WW3. I am not surprised that officials are zipped lipped about the USS Scorpion. But a precised investigation of all details gathered over several years leaves ... A great book written by an investigative writer and newspaper editor who did his "homework" before writing this book. Statements by U.S. Naval personnel who were tasked with finding the sunken sub; statements by the soviets and events that indicated the U.S. Navy knew the sub was sunk within hours of the sinking... all show a vast cover-up to protect spying information that could not be released to the public. The information was so dangerous that it could have lead to WW3. I am not surprised that officials are zipped lipped about the USS Scorpion. But a precised investigation of all details gathered over several years leaves one to conclude the truth: the sub was sunk in retaliation for the U.S. Navy secret sinking of a soviet sub several weeks prior to the sinking of the SCORPION. We then salvaged that Soviet Sub years later under the guise of the Glomar Explorer... a ship built by Howard Huges Company under contract from the U.S. Military. A good book for military historians or those interested in submarine history. The book contains some information that is not really needed but was given to highlight and commend the lives of the men who lost their lives in the Cold War. Several photos are in the book, including a section of a sonar tape that captured portions of the implosions after the torpedo ruptured the hull. A graphic recreation of what happened after the blast... sensitive and thoughtful. The sinking "COULD NOT" not have taken place if not for the traitor John Walker who sold encryption information to the Soviets. The acts of John Walker allowed the Soviets to read communications to and from U.S. Submarines. Those communications also included signals sent to air craft carriers deploy in support of the Viet Nam war. Thus the Soviets knew when a strike was planned and passed that information onto its' Ally, China, who was supporting the communist opposition in Viet Nam. Walker's actions also allowed the Soviets to glean information that led them to believe the U.S. Navy had sunk one of their subs. Based on that gleaned information the Soviets struck back by setting a trap to lure a U.S. Naval sub to an area where the Soviets were conducting suspicious activities near the Azores. The surface activities were mere a farce to attract U.S. Naval attention; knowing that the U.S. Navy would send a sub to spy and ascertain what the Soviets were doing. Thereafter, all the Soviets had to do was have a sub lay in wait for whatever sub the U.S. Navy sent to investigate the Soviet surface action. This trap would not have been possible if they didn't have the encryption keys given to them by John Walker. The Soviets knew the time, course and identity of the sub sent to spy on the Soviets. This book is highly recommended.

Spellbinding, tells of the goverment cover up, so as not to let the Soviets how good our detection device were.

I was in SubSquadronSix during the time Scorpion went down ... my recollections of events were the same as in the book.

Unidentified Naval officials describes the loss of the Scorpion as an "inexplicable accident and one of the greatest unsolved sea mysteries of our time". The author tells "the dramatic story of a secret battle that could have brought about World War III." The paperback print is small, but the story holds one engrossed in those details and wanting to know more about the sinking of the sub.
