over ten years old, but its still a great compuer
The Clamshell iBook may very well be the best looking notebook computer ever made, but for being ten years old it will not leave you waiting at the keys as long as you avoid installing newer software. Most older iBooks will need a new battery and you couldn't go wrong investing in a modest RAM increase. This machine is considerably heavier than the newer notebooks, but hey it does come with a handle! The 3.2GB Hard Drive is a joke considering that you can buy a 32GB+ flash drive or an iPod with 160GB of storage space. The Clamshell G3 iBook is a really cool retro machine that is still useful.The Clamshell iBook may very well be the best looking notebook computer ever made, but for being ten years old it will not leave you waiting at the keys as long as you avoid installing newer software. Still rocks ten years later.
If you surf the net, write papers and stuff like that, this machine still works as well as when it came out a decade ago, if not better. For best results, get a Firewire model with 10.4 Tiger, maxed memory and at least 20 gb hard drive. Don't go crazy installing software and you have a useful and eye catching machine. Pour fureter, rédiger et d'autres tâches quotidiennes, cet ordinateur marche aussi bien que lors de sa sortie il y a plus de dix ans, voire mieux. Pour de meilleurs rendements, achetez-vous un modèle Firewire à 10.4 Tiger, le maximium de mémoire et un disque dur d'au moins 20 go. Apple iBook G3 Clamshell
These adorable clamshell iBooks are just plain fun. They seem to bring out the creativity in the user too. If you're looking for a cheap machine to surf the web, look elsewhere. These models aren't really upgradeable enough run today's web browsers, and the older browsers have trouble with the newer pages. If you want to write, draw, email, play some older games and have fun in a tough, colorful package, then the G3 Clamshell iBook is for you. If you want to make a statement, this laptop is for you. They are also loads of fun to take apart and work on. You can go to ifixit.com and get detailed instructions with photos about how to take your iBook apart and change out various parts. Great laptop, amazing hardware build quality and great value for the $$$
I bought this iBook because its a solid running workhorse and classic and one of the first laptops that came out after the return of Steve Jobs to the company. As with all Apple products, the fit and finish is extremely good, even for this plastic case. The plastic they chose for it is high quality, similar to what you would find on their desktop line at the time. No creaking or rubbing of plastic parts is heard when moving the laptop as is often with similar Wintel laptops of this era. Its a very solid piece of hardware. The design of the laptop is really groundbreaking and holds its looks even in 2014. The screen size is decent and 800x600 resolution is fine to work with. Keep in mind your scope with what you want to accomplish with this laptop, as you still need to bear in mind that it ... The PowerPC G3 is a great architecture and Jobs talks about the power of it in several Apple press announcements of the time. This being said, it still cannot accomplish tasks with similar performance to that of an Intel processor based on the Core architecture. It is upgradable to Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) with pretty decent performance. The laptop's Airport card (if it came with one) can then connect with wifi access points over 802.11b that use WPA2 encryption. Also with 10.4, you can use a semi modern browser, TenFourFox, which is a relatively new(2013) fork of firefox ESR 31. With those two critical pieces, WPA2 and relatively modern firefox, combined with a decent battery (around 2 hours with the clamshell i got) I find this laptop to be a very very solid laptop for actual use in 2014, on 1999 hardware. Be aware that if you get one with OS9, while its semi useful and has the most compatibility/performance as it was the OS that the clamshell g3's were designed for, the nostalgia will wear off quickly and you will soon be wanting to do more. If you do not need heavy internet usage and would like to use the laptop for productivity apps, games or itunes, OS9 would make an excellent choice however. I mentioned itunes for OS9, and I would like to point out that you will need version 2.0.4 which is the last version released for OS9. It still supports CD listening/burning, mp3's and streaming radio stations but lacks a lot of the other fluff features of later iterations, such as the music store. Overall, this is an amazing laptop that is truly a monument for Apples hardware engineering talent and product design. Would still recommend to any collector or power use alike.
