Stifled by her royal entourage on a trip to Rome, Hepburn's Princess Ann escapes to explore the Italian city on her own. While incognito, she falls in love with an American newspaperman, Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). When Bradley learns of Ann's true identity, he finds himself torn between following his nose for news--and turning her into a big story--or the growing affections of his heart. A hit in 1953, ROMAN HOLIDAY won Hepburn an Academy Award for Best Actress, and was also notable for its Oscar-winning story by then-blacklisted Dalton Trumbo (credited as Ian McLellan Hunter).

Roman Holiday is a Holiday for All to Enjoy
Audrey Hepburn is magnificent in this movie. She plays Princess Ann, who leads a boring life as a princess, and so decides to escape for some fun while in Rome. She is found by Joe Bradley, played by Gregory Peck--also magnificent in his role--not knowing her identity at first. As a reporter who was scheduled to have a group interview with the princess, he finally realizes who she is and makes a huge bet with his boss that he can get the story of the century from the princess. What actually happens is he falls in love with her, and thus he would never embarrass the Princess by reporting on her unapproved "holiday." Even though the movie is not in color, we are treated to scenes in Rome that you hardly ever hear about: the Wishing Wall, the inside of the Coliseum, a mysterious stone ... Audrey Hepburn is magnificent in this movie. She plays Princess Ann, who leads a boring life as a princess, and so decides to escape for some fun while in Rome. Another interesting fact is that the movie won an Oscar for Motion Picture Story to Mc Lellan Hunter, who was not really the writer; the writer was Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted at this time by the McCarthy machine. This problem was straightened out 40 years later. Sit back and enjoy Audrey Hepburn at her best (she's always great). This movie is appropriate for all ages and is one that you will want to see over and over.

This is such a COOL movie!! Audrey Hepburn in her first film role is perfect! Gregory Peck is outstanding. It's got a little bit of everything!

Awesome movie and family friendly!
I bought the movie because I loved seeing it on Netflix and that Audrey Hepburn was in the movie to play princess Anna(she calls herelf Anya. This is my second favorite next to Ever After-(Drew Barrymore)I feel that Audrey Hepburn is very talented actress,love her personality and being so funny. I have another reasons on why this movie has rating of 5 because it is very clean not have swearing words and sex.!I do wish these in many movies and it would be more enjoyable for people including me. Other movies are very difficult to find that that is not involved with swearing words, sex and violence. Another upside,this movie was made years ago with subtitles and I'm happy about this movie that was created and should be with all movies available for people who need it. What is a princess doing asleep on a street bench in Rome, Italy?
This delightful, older DVD is exceptionally well acted, especially by Audrey Hepburn, the princess, who breaks out of her royal constraints for a Roman escapade. This is comical, nearly family viewing, except for young children. Teens and adults of every age can smile at the iconic Roman, unexpected scenes. I thought the early staircase choreography was beautifully done. Audrey Hepburn's Best Classic Movies
Breakfast at Tiffany's and Roman Holiday are vintage romantic comedies. At times its's so charming, and 1950's sophisticated. The fashion's all make a huge statement. Some scenes make you laugh and then cry for no reason. Audrey Hepburn is young, slim, and just drop dead gorgeous. I would highly recommend these movies.
