  • Handy simple GPS

I've owned at least 5 of these units over the past 12 years and every time I break, lose, or give one away I find myself buying a replacement. They're easy to use, fairly rugged, fairly reliable given the age of the technology, and they have good battery life. Sometimes on cloudy days or in steep canyons they have a little trouble locking on to enough satellites to get or keep an accurate fix. The rubber button cover on the joystick loses the printed arrow within a few uses making it hard to figure out how to start the unit up unless you're familiar with them. This unit has a great feature that makes earlier eXplorist units almost worthless... with this unit you can attach a cable that uses USB to connect to your computer to upload waypoints you want to visit or download waypoints you ...

  • Magellan 210 vs Magellan SporTrac GPS

Magellan 210 vs SporTrac Pros: Small, good display, quick to update, battery life ok, many geocache file sets, very fast usb computer connection, simple file system accessable from PC and generally easier to use. Cons: Geocache file sets limited to 200 caches, vs 500 on SporTrac. Documentation weak, limit on 200 caches per file is not easy to find (maybe impossible). Switching from one Geocache file to another is complicated and the current choice is not easy to determine. Caches over 200 in Geocache file are truncated and just do not appear. No indication, just missing caches. Conclusion: The 210 is easier to use and faster all around, it is a good step up from the SporTrac. The GeoCache feature needs work, caches should be able to be searched and deleted, like POI's. What would be ...

  • Nice GPS, but don’t get too excited

I’ve owned or own a Magellan 300 (10 years old) and eXplorist 100, Garmin V and a TomTom wide screen. I wanted the eXplorist 210 for hiking. Operates much like the 100, accept has a base map and allows you to download GPS data into your computer. I chose this unit because it still has a grayscale display screen, so it uses less power over color, lasting up to 18 hour on 2 AA batteries. I’m pleased with the eXplorist 210 and it’s operation. I’m disappointed in Magellan and support that is completely absent. Three emails to purchased mapping software went unanswered. Likewise the Magellan website is useless for support, I’ve never been able to find straight answers for mapping software, firmware requirements for the GPS and what will work with the eXplorist 210. Pros are small, rugged, ...

  • Just what I wanted

I bought this item because I already own an eXplorist 100 and have used it for almost 10 years without a failure and know the features and menus. The 100 & 210 units use 2 AA batteries which allows me to rotate rechargable AA - no special batteries. Also the eXplorist has a base map for major roads in USA which helps orient me on overcast days. However, the real reason I bought it was the Geocaching features. I can now download 200 caches very quickly from the weekly Pocket Query I have generated and have the caches on a moments notice if I am in a certain area. I am happy with my 210 model for the time being. It is supposed to have a marine feature too but I have not checked to see if it works yet.

  • Not sure...

I purchased my 210 for use in both geocaching and for work. The first one I received had a dead screen. The second one just went down with a broken on/off switch. Either I am very unlucky or the quality of the unit leaves much to be desired. I am very, very careful with the electronic equipment I own, so it is not misuse. As far as the unit goes, ease of use, connectivity, geocaching features, all excellent. Battery usage is the only drawback, run rechargeable batteries and that takes care of the issue, requires replacement more often.
