Time well spent to watch many times over.
Although this series dates from the early 1970's, it is by far the most accurate telling of the epic story of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Yet it falls into the trap of placing her reign on a pedistal, when in fact it was not nearly as praiseworthy. Unfortunatly, Elizabeth I listened to the bad advice from a core of anti-Catholic bigots in the beginning of her reign, and allowed for the persecution and execution of thousands of priests and people simply due to their religion. On the other hand, the reign on Elizabeth I marked a golden age of music and the arts in England (Shakespeare,Marlowe, Tallis, Tavener are but a few great English playrights and composers who flourished during her reign). The Tudor/Elizabethan style of architecture outlasted her by nearly 75 years. This ... This series is also magnificently acted by Glenda Jackson, and the others who potrayed notable figures of her time and reign (Queen Mary was wonderfully portrayed, as was the politics and intrigue of her reign. I would recommend this dvd to everyone who is a fan of British history. If you know your history, it isn't easy to overlook the fact that this series glorifies Elizabeth I a bit too much, while her faults and hidden predjudices are hardly mentioned. Still, it is a great series which brings the viewer into the 16th century with ease. It is totally convincing. Just for that, it deserves an A+, and a standing ovation for all the principle actors who told this monumental story.

One word of caution, if you are showing this to young children, there are 3 scenes you may consider censoring. One is during the period when Elizabeth is close to marrying the Duke of France. When you see him on his ship with a woman in his bed, beware that she will soon be shown fully unclothed. Be careful anytime the Duke is shown in bed, as he often makes lewd/sexual remarks, etc. Also, when Mary Queen of Scots is executed, they DO show her headless body, And 3, When "Bloody Mary" takes the Throne in Scene 1, she has ememies that treated Her and Her Mother, Kathern of Aragon;(King Henry Viii 1st Wife); Wrong or poorly, Beheaded, and they DO show decaputated Heads on Posts lining the road. This Movie Kept me Interested thoughout the movie. Interesting to learn the Royal Family Life and ... Glenda Jackson at her best
Probably one of the best enactments of Queen Elizabeth's life I have ever seen and I have seen alot(big fan). The acting is high quality, the scenery ,the costumes, all top notch. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it. Apparently historically accurate which is a plus but the acting is flawless.

Historical accuracy is paramount throughout; primary and secondary sources shine like gems throughout and lend constant credibility. This may be fictionalized history, but it is undoubtably based on and guided by FACTS, a method seemingly out of fashion these days.
