With the romantic comedy RUMOR HAS IT, director Rob Reiner (WHEN HARRY MET SALLY) attempts the tricky task of creating a film based on an already celebrated classic, 1967's THE GRADUATE. Starring Dustin Hoffman and based on a novel by Charlie Webb, the original film revolved around the love triangle between a recent college-graduate, his girlfriend, and her famously seductive mother. Here, Reiner casts a chain-smoking Shirley MacLaine as the supposed real-life inspiration for Mrs. Robinson, and Jennifer Aniston as her granddaughter. Set for the most part within the gossipy community of Pasadena, California, the film follows Sarah Huttinger (Aniston) and her fiancé (Mark Ruffalo) as they travel home for her perky sister's (Mena Suvari) wedding. Having nothing in common with her family, Sarah is intrigued upon learning that she may actually be the secret love child of her deceased mother and Beau Borroughs (Kevin Costner), the man whose affairs with both Sarah's mother and grandmother supposedly inspired Charlie Webb, a classmate and friend of Beau, to write THE GRADUATE. From here, Sarah seeks out Beau, interested in him as a father-like figure and possibly more. Aniston brings a Rachel-like (FRIENDS) comic vibe to her character, frequently expressing her neuroses by talking to herself out loud in a sitcom-ish style. Costner is plenty capable in his role, but even with Beau's riches and charm, viewers may find it hard to understand why a young woman would embark on a romance with the same man who bedded her mother and grandmother. Reiner's script veers away from the classic romantic comedy formula by keeping Ruffalo's character at the sidelines. Rather, RUMOR HAS IT focuses on one woman's journey towards adulthood, self-realization, and acceptance of her origins via a path that while strange and potentially incestuous, seems to be family tradition.

    Only worth looking for me

    Fun to see an extension of 'The Graduate' story and it was fun to see myself (barely -- I worked as an extra on the movie). Unfortunately, this movie was made when Hollywood was trying to see if Jennifer Aniston could fill the big screen -- she really can't. The DVD itself worked just fine in spite of some visible scratches which I presume shows it was viewed by a number of times, but the price still made it a great value. For me, the real stars of this movie turned out to be Shirley MacLaine and Mark Ruffalo who arguably outperformed both Aniston and Costner. But if you were not in the movie it's not something you would see twice.

    Sad, heartwarming and funny

    This was one of the better movies I have seen this year. It is funny, sad and heartwarming, a combination that usually makes up a good movie. Jennifer Aniston does a wonderful job and if you've ever doubted a decision you've made in the love department, you can relate to her. Shirley MacLaine is absolutely humorous in this film. Her quips and smart comments keep you laughing and of course Kevin Costner, a wonderful actor who is always nice to look at. I wasn't disappointed in this film and would recommend it if you enjoy a good 'finding yourself love story'.

    Rumor Has It .....the Rumor is Good!!

    I purchased this DVD after seeing in the theaters months ago when it came out. It is a very funny light hearted flick. "Jennifer Aniston plays Sarah Huttinger, whose return home with her fiance convinces her that the sedate, proper, country-club lifestyle of her family isn't for her, and that maybe the Huttinger family isn't even hers. As Sarah uncovers secrets that suggest the Huttingers are neither sedate nor proper - and as Kevin Costner, Shirley MacLaine and Mark Ruffalo join the fun. The story is rumor. The laughs are real!" The movie is very very funny with spoof of "The Graduate" Storyline. Jennifer Aniston is great as always, Shirley MacLaine is hilarius and Kevin Costner is still gorgeous at 53. It's a great movie, you'll enjoy if you like romantic comedies.

    AWESOME!

    This movie showcases Jennifer Anniston at her funniest and most talented! She can express a world of emotion with just a lift of the eyebrow, sidelong glance, etc., without having to say one word! She is truly a gifted actress and is at the heart of what makes this movie work! The movie is light, fun, funny, at times a bit tearful, and is most engaging. Of course, Kevin Costner is so good you forget he is acting! But you can also say the same for Shirley McLaine. As you can tell, I loved the movie and will watch it again . . . and most likely again after that!
