An award-winning columnist with the Los Angeles Times, Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) ultimately becomes an advocate for L.A.’s homeless population when he meets Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), a talented musician who's been playing a two-stringed violin while living on the streets and battling mental illness. Struck by Ayers’s passion for music, Lopez begins to write a series of columns about his new acquaintance while attempting to get him off the streets and playing music again. Amidst numerous achievements and setbacks, Lopez and Ayers develop a friendship based on mutual respect despite their many differences, and Lopez rediscovers his humanity.While the focus of the film is the relationship that develops between the two men, the film also tackles the harsh realities of homelessness and the plight of the mentally ill. Lending authenticity to the story, a number of L.A.’s homeless population were cast as extras in the film. An additional subplot is the quandary that daily newspapers face as the world and the news increasingly go electronic, and popular news becomes more sensationalistic. Foxx is both heartbreaking and life-affirming as Ayers, whose undiagnosed schizophrenia drove him away from Juilliard as a young man, and whose fierce independence keeps him on the streets. Downey Jr. turns in a nuanced performance as Lopez, who finally realizes that while he may not be able to save Ayers, he can accept him as he is. Catherine Keener, Lisa Gay Hamilton, and Tom Hollander appear in supporting roles.

I got this for under $4 and free shipping, later to find it at Half price Books for $4.99! It was Brand new and in perfect condition. I had not been able to find it any where else so was very happy to get it from you so reasonable and fast. LOVED the movie! Very touching and another grand example of every day people recognizing the extraordinary in others - even when challenged. Robert Downey Jr and Jamie Foxx are outstanding in their roles. The Soloist: Even my high school students love it!
It's hard to say which lead actor does the better job here, Robert Downey Jr. or Jamie Foxx. But one shouldn't even compare their performances. These actors work with each other in such ways that they bring out nuances in character that make the conflicts even more intense and relatable. When I saw trailers for this film I was not sure I wanted to sit through it. Some parts of it are quite painful to watch, especially if someone close to you has a serious mental illness. But the situations and dialog are handled very sensitively and realistically at the same time. What's hard to accept, but I ultimately see it must be accepted, is that some mental health consumers cannot be "fixed" to the extent that societal norms might want them to be fixed by medication or other therapies. Yes, ... It's hard to say which lead actor does the better job here, Robert Downey Jr. or Jamie Foxx. But one shouldn't even compare their performances. These actors work with each other in such ways that they bring out nuances in character that make the conflicts even more intense and relatable. Yes, hundreds of thousands of humans lead more productive and "normal" lives because of "meds," but psychotropic medicines don't work for everyone, and there are some folks out there whose real lives simply don't provide the opportunities to get treatment. The scenes that must have been the most difficult to write and film include Anthony's flashbacks that feature early symptoms of schizophrenia. These attempts sometimes fall short in movies or books, but that's because of their pure subjective differences. I showed this movie to my 10th graders and they responded positively. I know that they are aware of many issues unknown to them before viewing. I also know that many educators use this film during the "shantytown" benefits for the homeless held at their schools or universities. What a good sign that this film is having a real impact on both awareness and donations to very worthwhile causes. "The Soloist" does not cheat or pander at the end in favor of a happy conclusion. Nor is it hopeless. Maybe we will marginalize mentally ill citizens a little less because of this film. And maybe we will take more seriously the calls for a "War" on mental health like past politicians have called for wars on physical disorders.

I love Robert Downey Junior. His acting is always so real and complex. He is honest in his presence , great moving, heartfelt effort on his part. Considering he has experienced this kind of life style ( drugs ) this was very easy to be real. I know it took his strength and lot's of courage to be true to this part. Great job !! Jamie Foxx... Geez, he can do better than this. Did not like his part or him in itI love Robert Downey Junior. His acting is always so real and complex.
