'Gnaw: Food of the Gods 2' is...a very strange film. Ostensibly, it's the sequel to Bert I. Gordon's 1970's adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel 'The Food of the Gods,' although from what I understand the movie's shooting title was simply 'Gnaw' and the connection to Gordon's film was added later. Certainly, it has nothing to do with the events of the 70's film beyond the title. In that film, the titular "food" was a mysterious oatmeal-like glop that burbled up from the ground. Here, the "food" (and it's only called that once) is a greenish growth serum developed by a scientist. Where to begin? Our hero (and the film's sole likable character) is Neil Hamilton, who teaches at Hamelin University, ... 'Gnaw: Food of the Gods 2' is...a very strange film. Ostensibly, it's the sequel to Bert I. Our hero (and the film's sole likable character) is Neil Hamilton, who teaches at Hamelin University, which is under fire from animal rights activists because Neil's rival professor Edmond Delhurst is using animals for his cancer research. Neil gets a phone call from an old colleague of his, Kate Travis (or Kate Treger if the end credits are to be believed; she's clearly called Travis in dialogue though). Kate is the aforementioned scientist who done went and developed a growth serum to treat a little boy's growth defeciency. It worked too well and now the kid is a giant. Not to mention very profane and bordering on homicidal mania. So Neil takes a sample of the serum back to Hamelin to try and make an antidote. He tests it on some tomato plants and then some lab rats. Then those animal rights people bust into the university and trash the place, and accidentally set free the rats, one of which has already grown to the size of a small dog and kills lead activist Mark. Soon all of the rats grow gigantic and infest the college and eat people. The police become involved in the form of swaggering doofus Lieutenant Weizel, as well as a pair of braindead exterminators, the flamethrower-toting Jacques and useless couch potato Louis. Neil also helps out in any way he can. Their efforts are hampered by Dean White, who doesn't want the rat attacks made public because Hamelin has the grand opening of a new sports complex comin' up. The special effects are pretty decent. The rats are represented by a combination of real rats on tiny sets, and surprisingly good (but still hokey) puppet heads for when they attack people. And in the film's most gruesome scene, "evil" scientist Edmond Delhurst dies after mixing the growth serum with canine cancer cells and accidentally cuts his finger, getting the mixture in his bloodstream, leading to a disgusting transformation sequence, replete with bubbling tumors and spurting pus. Yuck. Overall, the movie is pretty mean-spirited, gross and downright poorly written. But it's fun for what it is. Besides, it's the only movie I can think of where a guy dies by turning into a puddle of dog cancer. Whether or not this is a good thing or a bad thing is entirely up to you.
