This is a reliable and well made Pocket PC
I believe Toshiba made a very good Pocket PC when they designed the E405. I had previously owned the Toshiba E335 before purchasing this device and was glad to see how many improvements Toshiba made on their newer model. My E335 had frequent system crashes, but my new device has never had one crash in over a year. This is one of my favorite parts about my new Pocket PC: reliability. The machine is very small, has a great screen, is well made, and is nicely designed. The one major flaw I have had with this device is the record button on the upper-left corner of the unit. This button is too easy to press and I have had many problems with my Pocket PC turning on because of this button. Toshiba did place a hold switch on the botton-left hand corner of the unit, which disables all ... I believe Toshiba made a very good Pocket PC when they designed the E405. The E405 has Flash Memory, a fast processor, and a really compact design. There is a lot to like about this Pocket PC. While some say Toshiba has bad customer service, I feel this unit is made so well that one doesn't need customer service. Toshiba made a mistake when they stopped producing Pocket PCs. This company was on the right track to making Pocket PCs that were the best on the market.

Toshiba e405 -a Very Very Good Buy!
The e405 is a PDA that I would recommend to low, mid and non-wireless high level PDA users. Palm platform PDA's do not recognize script handwriting and don't allow text input anywhere on the PDA screen. Windows/Pocket PC's do this quite well. The Pocket PC also comes standard with Windows Media Player enabling my e405 to function like a full-featured "ipod". Traveling with head phones or portable speakers, I can listen to hours of endless music. My email replies are accomplished with each desktop sync via Pocket outlook. I own a desktop, Laptop and a tablet PC. But my e405 lets me immediately access/process information almost ANYWHERE! Even in church (with PocketBible software). e405 Pros: Ultra-Slim pocket flattering design wrapped in a dark blue shell. 32 wonderful megs of Flash ... The e405 is a PDA that I would recommend to low, mid and non-wireless high level PDA users. This is vital if traveling and I cannot sync. The SD removable memory card slot offers almost limitless storage via 64/128/256/512Meg or 1 to 2 Gig storage cards. I use separate cards for total system or emergency Backup, MP3 music libraries, pictures, presentations, manuals, pricing, misc. data, future reading, articles, docs, spreadsheets, etc. between my PDA, Desktop and Laptop (that don't need syncing). Included Text to speech software allows my PDA to read to me. Voice notes feature creates hands-free notes and reminders. Variable display brightness to save battery life or overcome daytime glare. A fraction of 64 Megs (user adjustable program memory I trust with over 3,000 mostly business contacts. Battery Life is excellent 4 hours heavy use and several days on low, mostly stand-by use. Sturdy metal anti-flexing structure resists damaging of the PDA screen and main circuit board. Numerous user programmable features have made my 2-year e405 experience one of ongoing discovery and appreciation. After several heart stopping drops, and a beat up exterior, my e405 still works! And after a brief and disappointing attempted ipaq 1955 replacement, I ebay'd until I found another e405 with a hard case that I will not remove for anything. e405 Cons: If you need a portable keyboard or Wireless capabilities, you will need a WiFi card and a Wireless keyboard. Could prove to be a pocketbook and battery drain. A Step up to the e800/e805/830 Toshiba's may be more practical. After numerous software and sync problems with the ipaq rx1955 right out of the box, I went back to the Toshiba e405. Also, the ipaq rx1955 didn't have flash ROM as did my e405. I've seen reviews mentioning poor Toshiba support. I wouldn't know because I've never had to contact Toshiba in over two years that I've had the e405. I continually contacted HP support (who was very responsive) but unable to get my ipaq fully operational over a three month period. While installing some (compatible) software applications, my e405 would generate software incompatibility messages. Contrary to the message, the software would work fine.

Toshiba e405 Excellent PDA, affordable, stylish
I have owned/used no less than a dozen PDa's/Pocket PC's/Palm devices since they first came out. Now they seem to be falling from fashion. But that doesn't keep a gadget nut like myself from continually buying and trying something new (old). In the case of the Toshiba e400/405 I am truly impressed by the design of the slim unit. Even though Mobile 6 is out, I still find Pocket PC's with the 2003 operating system to be quite satisfactory for my needs. Although the unit lacks WiFi, I find no problem pairing with my BlueTooth phone and getting connected if I need to. The standard bells and whistlles are there, like Pocket Word/Excel, calculator, games, etc. but the way all this is packaged is what sets the Toshiba apart from the crowd. Speakers are not the best quality, but the headphone output makes up for that with full sounding tones and the ability to adjust balance as well as bass and treble. Screen brightness can be set on auto to extend battery life, but I like it a little brighter indoors so I don't use this feature much. The best thing is you can get one of these for a fraction of the original price and there is still tons of software on the market which will allow you to personalize your device. All in all a great investment and useful tool for the geek in all of us.

Excellent pocket PC for reading e-books.
I purchased this pocket PC primarily for use as a portable e-book reader (which is all I have used it for, to date). It's design and functionality are excellent for this purpose. The screen size is more than adequate. It has not lagged the least bit while reading various e-books. The scroll wheel is well placed and very comfortable to use. The battery life is more than adequate and relatively quick to charge. I love this device, it is very easy to use. It also have a great display screen for viewing. I only wish that it had a CF (compact flash) slot like it's bigger brother the E800 It plays music (mp3 files) that are stored on the SD card (the only slot), and has a great sounding play back system. This device also connects to your computer (via USB), syns files, and backup files when needed.
