Voiced by comedian Dana Gould, Gex spews over 300 one-liners as he searches for remote controls to aid in his escape throughout a variety of worlds based on film and television genres, such as animation, horror, and martial arts. Sega Saturn Gex reveiw/comparison
I had initially purchased this game because I had it on Playstation one, and wanted to see how the saturn version compared. For the most part, the game feels like the Playstation version, a solid 2D platformer. The game starts with an overworld, similar to Super Mario World, the player is then to choose which world to start on. All worlds and levels are based off of different TV/movie genres. If starting a new game, the only world available to the player is the horror world, in which all the levels have horror movie themes enemies and obstacles. As the player completes more levels other worlds then become open for play, I can recall at one point that there is a cartoon world, but I can't remember any more off the top of my head. The levels have vibrant and colorful themes, as well as a ... I had initially purchased this game because I had it on Playstation one, and wanted to see how the saturn version compared. For the most part, the game feels like the Playstation version, a solid 2D platformer. The levels have vibrant and colorful themes, as well as a very gentle difficulty curve for new players. While the story has survived the test of time (its not horrible) the jokes told by the main character are VERY uninspired, are usually dated by old pop culture references. The music isn't really memorable, but its not counter-intuitive to the gameplay or themes. In fact, most of the music fits rather well, its just not as good as the Super Mario Bros theme. The character (at least in this gamers opinion) is a little unresponsive to directional controls, making landing on small surfaces in later levels difficult, although this is probably attributed to the design of the Sega Saturn Controller. Unfortunately this reviewer only has one controller for the Sega Saturn, so I wasn't able to attribute the directional issue to my controller or to the game itself. One thing that was a major plus though is that the load times for the Saturn version of the game are SUBSTANTIALLY lower, in some cases between comparing the Saturn and Playstation versions, it felt like comparing a cartridge to a disk. For example level one loads a full 10 seconds quicker on the Saturn version of the game. In fact, the only fault I truly have with this game is the same for both systems, the fact that in order to continue progress, you're supposed to use a password. The 3D0 version (original was released in 1994) has a save feature, but then every console release didn't; and considering that the Sega Saturn version was released in 1997, 3 years after the original release, and 2 years after the Saturn landed stateside, I honestly don't see a reason why saving wasn't an option. So if you can get over the lack of saves and dated jokes, gex is a really solid and fun platformer; a game that I would enjoy playing any time.

The Good: 5 worlds, 24 levels including bonus levels which are real fun. lots of fun you will like to play this game, The game looks Great, The controls are Great no problem there, Gex is funny sometimes, Lots of cool power ups & Passwords so you can get back to your game for when you want. The Bad: sometimes Gex can talk too much, most of the bad guys that try to kill you are very easy to kill not making it very Challenging , the bosses are not that hard, lots of the Levels are easy, and when you beat it there will be nothing new. not a lot of replay. I did not buy it but my brother did and the reason he told me was because the Game looked cool, & it got a good review, and we where 11 & 7. Also it was cheap and not that bad of a game and is played often because of the fact there is lots ... I find myself wondering why the Gex series ever died. Gex has all of the attributes a consoles mascot needs. He's cute, tough, and hilarious. The three Gex games were all good, but the first was the best. This one is a 2-D side scroller while the other two were set in 3-D environments. Given that the Sega Saturn is the best 2-D system ever made it would only make sense that Gex for the Saturn is the best (It was also available on the PSX, and the 3do). Gex has an at best mediocre plot, one that I found myself not paying much attention too throughout the game. But the gameplay more than makes up for this. Gex's abilities too tail whip, spit fire, and climb walls with suctioned feet make it a blast to play him. Take this lime green Gecko through environments that range from a ... A 2D retro gecko experience.
2D games are traditionally said to be the Sega Saturn's strong point and Gex is helpful proof of that. The original Gex (unlike the sequels which would follow on off the Saturn) is a 2D side scrolling platformer that places players as a gecko who can cling to surfaces, whip, and wisecrack. Said gecko Gex goes on a romp through TV themed worlds based on programs such as horror movies, cartoons, wild life settings, and Kung Fu cinema with good scenery, silly enemies, and actually good tunes to boot. Brought to life by an actual comedian's voice work, the game is a good 20+ level run. The only main downside of this retro gecko's game: passwords, which is strange given that the Saturn has internal and external memory (and the original 3DO version had saves.
