A Gem of Mennonite Recipes
I bought this “old cookbook” which was featured in a recent Country Living magazine. It is valuable because the author did so much testing of all the recipes and includes historical facts about Mennonite foods and culture. She was a professor and highly regarded. I am enjoying her side notes and also learning about the people and their recipes. My copy came in very good condition and in a timely manner.I bought this “old cookbook” which was featured in a recent Country Living magazine. Mennonite Community Cookbook by Mary Emma Showalter
If you are looking for a cookbook that you can get modern recipes from this is probably not for you. This is more like a little piece of history. It is wonderful reading as well as a great cookbook. Full of anecdotes about life in a time gone by, you should set aside some time to look through this book with page markers and just read and giggle. Among recipes for the most scrumptious soups, wholesome breads and yummy cakes, you will find the formula for homemade lye soap and a remedy for worms on cabbage. While the recipes in this book are not low fat (that wasn't a concern in 1950) they can easily be adapted if you are used to doing that or if you give it some thought. Even so, the front of the book is filled with info on how to measure and what all kinds of cooking terms mean, ... I don't think many modern housewives need to know how to keep their clothes from sticking to a frozen clothes line, but I have tried the recipe for polishing silver and it works. This is a great cookbook and a great read.

Must have for any fan of traditional Mennonite cooking!
My Mom had a copy of the "Mennonite Community Cookbook" in Her kitchen as far back as my memory goes. (She's 87 and still has one in her assisted living apt) I've had mine for maybe 30 years. Anyone interested in knowing about cooking in earlier generations of the Mennonite community should reserve a space on their bookshelf for this book. I wouldn't be without one as it's fascinating to just look through I bought this for a friend when she told me she didn't have. A Favorite ethnic cookbook with simple & delicious recipes.
Received this cook book as a Wedding gift in 1967. I Used and enjoyed it so much that I needed a replacement. The book contains very tasty recipes using common, everyday ingredients. Some recipes are hard to find, because they are unique to the German/Mennonite culture. There are some interesting facts about the history and the traditions of these people, included in the front of the chapters. I especially enjoy the information on how much food is prepared and eaten at a "Barn Raising".Received this cook book as a Wedding gift in 1967. One of My All-Time Favorites!
Outstanding cookbook. The recipes are simple, easy to understand and the directions are wonderful! I have collected cookbooks for many years and find that my favorites are the older tried-and-true recipes.
