A brilliant and faithful rendering of the Anglo-Saxon epic from the Nobel laureate. Composed toward the end of the first millennium of our era, Beowulf is the elegiac narrative of the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel's mother. He then returns to his own country and dies in old age in a vivid fight against a dragon. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on in the exhausted aftermath. In the contours of this story, at once remote and uncannily familiar at the end of the twentieth century, Seamus Heaney finds a resonance that summons power to the poetry from deep beneath its surface. Drawn to what he has called the "four-squareness of the utterance" in Beowulf and its immense emotional credibility, Heaney gives these epic qualities new and convincing reality for the contemporary reader.

    A MUST-Read!

    Ran into Beowulf during college. Great read! Love the translation, love the old text next to the translation. It reads like an adventure, makes connections to early Christianity to include the pagan structure of the day. Beowulf is still up-to-date today, as it shows the great courage of one man to overcome his 'demons'. Don't worry, this text does not rhyme; it is at the very least a great story, moreover, it gives great inside in the human nature and cultural heritage.

    Excellentin every sense.

    Five (5) star rating: Excellent introduction & poetical translation by Irish poet Seamus Heaney of this Anglo-Saxon literary classic in an all-too rarebi-lingual edition. I'd recommend the large print hardcover version for its ease of reading. Tolkien's prose translation seems less impressive by comparison In my opinion, Heaney's bi-lingual edition is the best of any translation published before or since in English.

    Great book.

    Its a very nice book. I love old books and new covers on old books. It's fascinating to read such old historical stories.
