Synopsis
"Menacing demons, wondrous miracles, sinister magic, and vivid characters make Thief a compulsive, lightning-paced tales that almost begs to be read aloud."--Miami Herald One of horror master and international bestselling author Clive Barker's classic early novels--the tale of a haunted house with many a dark secret, now available as a Harper Perennial Olive Edition. Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true . . . Mr. Hood's Holiday House has stood for a thousand years, welcoming children into its embrace. It is a place of miracles where every whim may be satisfied. There is a price to be paid, of course, but young Harvey Swick, bored with his life and beguiled by Mr. Hood's wonders, does not consider the consequences. It is only when the house shows its darker face--when Harvey discovers the pitiful creatures that dwell in its shadows--that he comes to doubt Mr. Hood's generosity. But the house and its mysterious architect will not release Harvey without a battle. Mr. Hood has plans for his young guest, a boy whose soul burns brighter than any he has encountered in ten centuries. . . ., "Menacing demons, wondrous miracles, sinister magic, and vivid characters make Thief a compulsive, lightning-paced tales that almost begs to be read aloud."-- Miami Herald One of horror master and international bestselling author Clive Barker's classic early novels--the tale of a haunted house with many a dark secret, now available as a Harper Perennial Olive Edition. • The Thief of Always by Clive Barker 1993

I use this book with struggling readers in the 9th grade. It is a great first book to use as a read-a-loud because the chapters are long enough to have some good thinking happening but short enough to complete in once class reading. The characters, Harvey, Wendell, Lulu, Mrs. Griffen and her three cats, Marr, Jive, Rictus, Carna, and the infamous Mr. Hood, are each different and bring different aspects of what it means to be good or evil. Young Harvey is tempted by the evil in Mr. Hoods Holiday House, but his true good nature, curiosity, intelligence, bravery, and strong friendship bonds prevails over the evil of the house. This older version has some interesting black and white depictions of characters and events in in novel. The 2003 edition does not include these pictures. I feel that ...

    • The Thief of Always

I've read this book several times....It takes just about two days to read it front to back, and although a Jr High School level book, this story is one of those that you wish you had read at an early age. It would have been a part of your psyche, as "A Wrinkle in Time", "The White Stag", "Witch on Blackbird Pond", and even more current "The Gift". It is not a typical Barker story...no gore, no taboo, and no adult theme whatsoever...Just great characters, great setting at a great age and the story is timeless....I'll read it several more time before I return to dust.

    • Great for all ages

This is a story that will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Barker's sketches are also fantastic. I first read this book in high school and experiencing it again years later was no less entertaining.
