Product Information

From a land famous for storytelling comes an "absolute masterpiece"* -- an epic novel of Ireland that captures the intimate, passionate texture of the Irish spirit. One wintry evening in 1951, an itinerant storyteller -- a Seanchai, the very last practitioner of a fabled tradition extending back hundreds of years -- arrives unannounced at a house in the Irish countryside. In exchange for a bed and a warm meal, he invites his hosts and some of their neighbors to join him by the fireside, and begins to tell formative stories of Ireland's history. One of his listeners, a nine-year-old boy, grows so entranced by the story-telling that, when the old man leaves abruptly under mysterious circumstances, the boy devotes himself to finding him again. Ronan's search for the Storyteller becomes both a journey of self-discovery and an immersion into the sometimes-conflicting histories of his native land. As the long-unspoken secrets of his own family begin to reveal themselves, he becomes increasingly single-minded in pursuit of the old man, who he fears may already be dead. But Ronan's personal path also leads him deeper and deeper into the history and mythology of Ireland itself, in all its drama, intrigue, and heroism. Ireland travels through the centuries, interweaving Ronan's quest for the Storyteller with a richly evocative unfolding of the great moments in Irish history, ranging from the savage grip of the Ice Age to the green andtroubled land of tourist brochures and political unrest. Along the way, we meet foolish kings and innocent monks, fabled saints and great works of art, shrewd Normanraiders, strong tribal leaders, poets, politicians, and lovers. Each illuminates the magic of Ireland and the eternal connection of its people to the land. A sweeping novel of huge ambition, Ireland is the beautifully told story of a remarkable nation. From the epic sweep of its telling to the precision of its characters -- great and small, tragic and comic -- it rings with the truth of a writer passionate about his country and in full command of his craft. * Jack Higgins

  • Buy this for yourself and everyone who loves life.

I bought this book on a whim. Not my usual sort of reading material. I usually go for psychological thrillers, mysteries, whodunits, and a bit of sci-fi - the castles and dragons, not the futuristic type. This book is such a smooth lovely read. You not only can imagine where the story takes you, but you can see it, touch it and taste it. It's endearing, and funny, infuriating, exasperating, melancholy, and every emotion in between. You'll cheer, and smile, grin and laugh, weep with the characters and thrill for them too. If you want to clear your mind, cleanse your soul and free up your emotions, I highly suggest this. Don't be in a hurry to get through it. Savor each and every word, every nuance and you'll feel freer afterward. You'll find ...

  • Starts off great and doesn't disappoint.

I am surprised that I did not figure out the ending ahead if time. Some people might. If so they would likely not appreciate reading the latter part of the book only to see an ending that they already saw coming. I loved learning a lot about Ireland's history and I found myself looking up a few things to see if it was fact or fiction. It is not a short book but it is an easy read. I liked it..

  • Ireland.......................Island of Dreams.........

It's difficult for me to write this review, because I have been through so much in my lifetime. I'm sure that most of you have, too. I'd like you to know, however, that as an avid reader, it is difficult to assess the greatest books of thousands that you have read in this world. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST (if not THE best). It has drama, it's historical, it is amazingly a flow of the best writing that I have seen in years ( and I've been around many years, lads & lassies). Actually one of the very best books that I have ever read. I would never admit it, but I cryed at the end. Excellent, Superb, a must BUY!

  • The emerald Island.

All peoples have their own ideas, superstitions, and ways of life. The Irish definitely do. Ireland is a country of tails, superstitions, little people, giants and folk law. It’s also home to the oldest man made structure on earth, Newgrange. If you are Irish or interested in the Irish, this book will introduce you to the Irish and to the mysteries and Magic of Ireland.

As you view Ireland's landscape and experience her wonderful villages, you'll encounter poets and politicians, monks and marauders, saints and sinners, kings and kinsmen.
