A traditional laptop with an optical drive and fairly modern choice of processors
I take care of qty 5 T530 Thinkpad's for my family. We purchased them because they offer traditional laptop features with a fairly modern processor and features and have a built in optical drive for a reasonable cost. The only failures I have had with the T530's were display related. On one I replaced the display after a white line appear on one side. The new replacement display was no more than $50 from an aftermarket source. Another machine developed vertical red lines across the bottom of the screen and required the display signal cable to be replaced. We are otherwise pleased with how they easily handle daily tasks at home, including one that is used with a USB/midi interface and a classic Korg Wavestation keyboard. They never seem to get warm unless you enable the NVIDIA video over an ... I take care of qty 5 T530 Thinkpad's for my family. If running Linux Mint or Ubuntu consider running the newest versions that can properly handle switching between the Intel and Nvidia video chipsets. Out of the box older versions of Mint and Ubuntu may only default to use of the Nvidia video chipset causing shorter battery life and non destructive heat build up. Be careful when purchasing used T530's. Many have been dropped and the corners of the case are easily damaged.

I wanted the T530 for three reasons: Large case to accommodate cooling for an i7-3940XM extreme edition CPU (3.0GHz Quad Core) Express card slot for eGPU (GTX 770) Nvidia 5400 for Optimus optimization of eGPU I also added 16GB RAM and 960GB SSD Hence the machine is fine as it is, but the upgrade potential is what mattered most to me. Newer machines will usually have slower CPU, or other compromises on these aspects.
