À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Billy Wilder's adaptation of the Broadway hit stars William Holden as the cynical Sefton. Set in the eponymous German prison camp during WWII, the director's broad, black comedy focuses on a group of decidedly unheroic prisoners. While they spend most of their time trying to entertain each other with comedy routines and pin-ups, they also occasionally entertain thoughts of escape. But escape is the last thing on the mind of the hard, calculating Sefton, a wheeler-dealer who's salted away a stash of creature comforts which are the envy of the barracks. When a couple of prisoners are killed while attempting to escape, Sefton collects the money he won by betting against their success, and many believe that it was he who informed the Germans. After a new prisoner, Lt. Dunbar (Don Taylor) talks openly about having bombed a German ammo train, he's immediately subjected to a harsh interrogation by sadistic commandant Oberst von Scherbach (Otto Preminger). Their suspicions confirmed, the prisoners take revenge against Sefton. A film whose depiction of American G.I.s as ordinary, even selfish, people probably seemed seemed edgier in the 1950s than it does now, it remains a durable entertainment, with incisive performances by Holden and Preminger.

  • POW camp WW2 movie~ OUTSTANDING I give it 10 out of 10

PLOT: STALAG 17 holds a group of downed flyers in World War 2. Each escape attempt is thwarted....how do the Nazis know everything going on inside the Camp? OUTSTANDING~ PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY BILLY WILDER ...THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST World War 2 prison camp movies (the other being of course the Great Escape~) but this stands above most~ William Holden won an OSCAR as a flyer downed and inside the camp while most scrape by day by day waiting for the war to end, Holden has an angle you name the way to make money he has it! MICE RACES, MAKE HIM MONEY BY GAMBLING~ HAVING FOUND dozens of clever ways to make HIM Money his footlocker looks like "Macys " in the middle of a barren camp~ the DISGUST of the other prisoners is felt but they "tolerate" this clever schemer~ several "escape" attempts ...

  • Excellent WWII film

I love classic films like this. For years, I thought this was the basis for Hogan's Heroes and was told it's not. This film has everything you can ask for in a classic: intrigue, comedy, drama, the list goes on. William Holden was the main reason I wanted this film. I don't own any of his others, so I bought what I felt was his best. Damn good actor who died before his time. Harvey Lembeck was great, too. He was in all the beach movies with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello as a bad-boy biker always schemeing against the former and their gang. Excellent performances by the entire cast, including a young Peter Graves, who went on to stardom on Mission: Impossible.

  • Stalag 17 Review

I first saw the movie at about age 10, and then in my twenties, and thought it was great. However, I had not seen it in over 30 years, and forgot much of the plot. Intelligently done, because it shows how people really interact with each other, that often the wrong people are blindly trusted, while everyone is suspicious of other's motivations. Although the viewer knows early on who the spy is, watching the mystery being solved is facinating. Great acting by all, the Germans included. Certainly among my 25 favorite movies of all time

  • War, drama, laughter, personalities... A top 5 movie for all time

The greatest war film every made. Drama like The Guns of Navarone. Human passion like Bridge over the River Kwai. A plot far deeper then Kellys Heroes, and an unusual romance in B & W. Stalag 17 was made with no special effects. No digital enhancement and a cast that was selectively chosen for talent and filling their roles perfectly. A classic!!! A masterpiece!!! A story for men, women and even children!!!

  • Well known story from German prison camp. Highly recommended viewing.
