Imperfect but essential for serious fans - 4 1/2 stars
I'll give them 5 stars for finally releasing this material, but there are some flaws with this collection that bump it down to a 4 star (4.5 really) rating. On the plus side: Prior to this release, the only official live set from the Gabriel-era Genesis was "Genesis Live", a 1 LP album covering material up to "Foxtrot". The glaring omission was "Supper's Ready". Fans like myself, who consider the stuff with Gabriel to be infinitely superior, had to settle for "Seconds Out" (more like "Sloppy Seconds"), with Phil Collins singing the vocals. Phil Collins did a mostly decent job at covering them, but it wasn't the real deal! This box set corrects this. The performances are all very good, and they include some of Peter ... I'll give them 5 stars for finally releasing this material, but there are some flaws with this collection that bump it down to a 4 star (4.5 really) rating. The collection includes two songs previously not on any album, "Twilight Alehouse" and "Happy the Man". "Happy the Man" doesn't thrill me, but "Twilight Alehouse" is great, and apparently an early concert favorite. On the minus side: Disk 4 is entirely material dating from before "Trespass", before Genesis really found their "classic" style. I am not a fan of their first album "From Genesis to Revelations". To me this CD is of interest only as a curiosity. It is very interesting, for instance, that Peter Gabriel already had that distinctive raspy quality to his voice in 1967, when he was 17 years old! Some of the material is decent, some is rather weak. Still, I won't be playing this disk very often. Another partial downer is that Gabriel and Hackett re-recorded some of their parts on the live "Lamb..." on the first two disks. In some spots it's quite obvious because, as with any singer, Peter Gabriel's voice changed in the 23 years since. Still this is nitpicking really. It's great to have the complete live performance. One further bit of nitpicking on the choice of material. I really don't mean to bash on Phil Collins, but do we really need a live version of "More Fool Me"? This song really was filler material. Meanwhile two glaring omissions from the collection are "Cinema Show", and especially "Fountain of Salmacis". Despite some imperfections, serious fans of the "real" Genesis need this collection. Neophytes should get the 4 classic studio albums, "Nursery Cryme", "Foxtrot", "Selling England by the Pound", and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" first, and then get this box set plus "Genesis Live". After that they should also get "Trespass" and "Trick of the Tale", which are not as good, but still very worthwhile. Skip the rest, in my (perhaps not so) humble opinion.

Great Live Version of Lamb Lies Down
Genesis Archive 1967-1975 is a very good collection of live and rare material for the diehard Genesis fan. I personally wouldn't spend $70 for this brand new, but if you like older Genesis, especially "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", it's worth spending $40 to add it to your collection. The first (2) discs are the entire "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" album performed live in 1975. The recording is excellent, but I should point out that Peter Gabriel re-recorded all of his vocals for this recording in 1998 because he wasn't happy with quality of the originally recored vocals (the elaborate costumes during the performance muffled his voice at times), though most listeners won't be able to tell. If you listen carefully you can hear that is voice does sound a little deeper and more ... Genesis Archive 1967-1975 is a very good collection of live and rare material for the diehard Genesis fan. The 3rd and 4th discs are a combination of early live tracks, demos and b-sides from Genesis' very early stuff. I would consider these discs for the Genesis fan who just can't get enough. Many of the live tracks are excellent, but I tend to get bored with these (2) discs because the demos and other stuff don't interst me all that much. All-in-all, this is a very good boxed set. I would recommend it to fans of early Genesis and for those who love "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"

Fantastic Genesis box set... especially if you can find it without paying an an arm and a leg.
Excellent box set. Almost the entire set consists of tracks that did NOT appear on the later 1970-1975 box set. I absolutely love the contemporaneous live performance of the entire Lamb Lies Down on Broadway concert, even with the overdubs (actually, they make it better). The 1973 live tracks complement the earlier Genesis Live album. The booklet is excellent, too. The whole set is great, and I'm glad, after years of looking, I was able to find it at a not-exorbitant price.Excellent box set. Sounds great, looks epic, I like the little book that comes with it.
I like it, I only recommend if you're a huge fan of Peter era Genesis.

Genesis Archive 1967-1975
Any Genesis fan will know how rare this collection of titles is. The music is what people spent hundreds of dollars on for poor quailty bootlegs . I first heard of them in early winter 1976 with Trick of the Tail, and searched for years for The Lamb recorded in this quality. On Ebay I was able to purchase this brand new set for HALF of what it cost retail. Steve in Chicago
