In Monster Hunter Freedom for the PlayStation Portable, beast masters can play at home or on the go. Start by selecting hair, face, voice, and other attributes to create a completely customized character, and then explore the village for challenges such as collecting a valuable egg from a dragon's nest or hunting down a certain creature. Players will find mini games further along the road at "Kokoto Farm." Monster hunters can plant seeds, fish, mine, or scavenge to earn money, items, and food. Working with and buying goods from villagers will increase town growth and development, which in turn opens up new options in the game.<br><br>When visiting the "Felyne Kitchen," gamers will find a great place to beef up their attributes. Cooking cats make meals that increase abilities for a designated period of time, also known as a "buff." A "buff" will last until a quest is cleared once, and then gamers must go back to the kitty cooks if they want another. Each cat has a "special" ingredient to use that will cause different effects, and the more the cats are used the better their "buffs" get. Two players may collect and deliver treasures within a designated time to achieve high scores and obtain items in the "treasure hunters" co-op game. A guild card collects high value prizes and can be traded with friends along with other items via the Ad-hoc multiplayer mode. Missions in Monster Hunter Freedom are tailored more toward single-player experiences, however up to four hunters may play together using Ad-hoc mode.

I've Spent 200+ Hours On MHF, And Could Spend 200 More!
Did you read the title of this review? If you did, good. If not, read it now. It's not an exaggeration. I have literally spent over 200 hours playing this action RPG, and I've heard of people going above 500. Why so long? Keep reading, and you'll find out. Monster Hunter Freedom, which originated from the popular PS2 series, does pretty much everything right in its conversion to a port. It makes very good use of the PSP's capabilities, and I imagine that this game is about as good as it's going to get. The graphics for MHF are absolutely breathtaking! From lush forests, to rolling fields, to scorching volcano areas, MHF consistently provides detailed, and gorgeous settings for a player to explore. All of the characters and creatures are also extremely detailed and aesthetically pleasing as well. For example, the vast majority of the 1000+ weapons and armor have a different graphic on a character, leaving endless possibilities for your character's physical appearance. The music in MHF is very appropriate, with various soundtracks for different monsters and areas. Sound effects are awesome; footsteps, the swinging of a blade, and a monster's roar all being very distinct, and exactly how they would sound in real life. MHF is also the first game that I know of to offer a Dolby Digital Surround Sound option, which I would imagine would offer an even more realistic playing experience. Now for the storyline. You're an adventurer/wannabe monster hunter that starts in a town that's constantly being attacked by monsters. That's all you need to know, and that's really all the game ever tells you. But to make up for lack of any semblance of a storyline... ...MHF absolutely shines in gameplay! For those who aren't familiar with the MH games, the object is to complete quests, so you can get more stuff, and then you can beat the stronger monsters, who give you even more stuff, which allows you to beat the even stronger monsters. Sounds repetitive? Perhaps, but it's worth it to get that uber-strong weapon or ultimate armor. For each wyvern you kill, (the official name of the "monsters",) you get a chance to carve its parts. Every wyvern has about 5 or so things that you can carve from it, some being a lot less common than others. These parts can be used to create various weapons and armor. For example, if you wanted to create a Kirin Bolt Sword and Shield, (one of 6 weapon types you can create,) you'd need to have 1 Kirin Horn, 4 Kirin Mane, and 2 Rubbery Hide. Not too bad, all you need to do is beat 2-3 Kirins, and another wyvern for the Rubbery Hide. Easy, right? Absolutely not! Now comes another point that needs to be mentioned... the wyverns themselves. Think of them like boss monsters... except MUCH stronger. Think you can hack and button mash like Untold Legends? Sure, if you want to die. Monsters can generally kill you within 5-10 strong attacks, with some of the strongest monsters having many one-hit kills. not only are they powerful, their health can be ENORMOUS. I have spent 50 minutes hacking away at a wyvern, only to run out of time on the quest before it died. So once you beat that wyvern that you could never beat before, or when you get enough parts for that awesome sword you've always wanted, there is a feeling of extreme fulfilment... and it continues throughout the game. This is the X factor that keeps people hooked. I only have 50 characters left, so... BUY THIS GAME!

MHF is one of the best game on PSP along with MHF2 i suppose. The goal of this game is to kill Wyverns to get materials to upgrade your stuff. It may sound like a regular MMORPG like World of Warcraft but it's not. This game is not that easy. Each wyvern you have to kill is a challenge by itself. They are all very hard to kill and each time you succeed you have a very proud feeling (a geek one). It's the part I liked the most about this game. The other part, that I didn't like, is the technical mistakes of this games that makes it very hard to play and very frustrating. Technical mistake : the camera. When you are closing a mountain edge, by example, the camera will spin crazy and you wont be able to see that killing dragon running angrily into you. Second thing, this game is extremely ... Second thing, this game is extremely hard, even with the good equipment. The quests to gather eggs or crystal are the most frustrating. When you have to bring some very heavy stuff back home. You can't attack and you can't run fast ! So all the monsters around will jump onto you and you'll drop the packaging so hard that it'll breaks and you'll have to get it one more time. The other thing very annoying are the controls. You have to manage your fingers to be able to move (analog) and to spin the camera (the arrows) at the same time ! I'ts a very not pleasant way to hold the console in your hands. The last thing i disliked is the lack of information on everything. You can't understand easily how things works in this game (Materials, combine, books, cat food, farm, equipment skills, etc...). You will probably feel lost at first. Google helped me alot. But I've got used to these unpleasant things and MHF is still one of the best game I ever bought (and one of the most frustrating too :O)). I recommend for people that likes the mix of RPG and hack-and-slash (action).

It is easy to learn and difficult to master. There's no game I've ever played that utilizes anything like this. The game is unique, addicting and amazingly fun with friends. If you play it and think it's fun, just imagine what it's like hunting cooperatively with a couple of other hunters! I can say from personal experience that there isn't much that beats monster hunter in terms of pure multiplayer fun. Pick this game up and give it a chance. If you enjoyed games like Zelda, Diablo II, Everquest and World of Warcraft, you'll love Monster Hunter Freedom.

Monster Hunter Freedom PSP Review
I absolutely love this game. I had it once before and it offered a lot of time killing when my husband was working late and I was alone. Some of the features that I really enjoyed was the ability to link up with another PSP and play with friends. There are endless quests you can do and even repeat ones you've already finished. There are so many opportunities to power up your armor and weapon, so many different types of monsters to hunt. It is a wonderful game!! One of the reasons I bought this is because I no longer have a copy of it. But this one isn't for me. It's part of a birthday present for my husband. I'm also getting him a PSP. The price was also wonderful! Especially for a factory sealed game! I highly recommend this game to everyone!I absolutely love this game. Mediocre at its finest
Monster Hunter Freedom has its good and bad moments. There are 1000s of items, equipment, 100s of monsters, areas, and good stuff like that. You can trade, buy, sell, combine items (1000s of combinations), cook, garden, fish, and many other things. Now for the monster hunting, it's extremely boring. It's very choppy and has a "cheap" feeling to it. Your character can't perform much tricks, except just struggle to lift a huge bone sword and slice the monster. The continous boring fight system becomes a dread. Each fighting area is very small, but you can go into other areas which comes with a 15-20 second load time. That's not that bad of a load time, but the fact that each area is very small is what makes it annoying. There's probably over 300+ hours of ... Monster Hunter Freedom has its good and bad moments.
