Descent 3, simply put, is a 3D experience of 360 degrees, over 30 merciless robots, and 20 powerful weapons. Strap yourself in, grab your favourite controlling device, and get ready to descend against some malfunctioning 'bots who are bent on destroying all in their path. Descent 3 picks up where Descent II left off. Somehow, your ship and you have escaped the warp-core explosion in one piece and have been flung through the far reaches of space towards a large roaring sun-planet. Just when it looks like the game is over before it begins, a PTMC mining ship snags you from a certain death. Unfortunately, the price of your rescue is high- you must venture within PTMC labs and bases to destroy and investigate the cause of the virus making the bots malfunction and become violent. Descent 3 features "Fusion Engine" technology which, unlike the first two Descent games, allows you to fly seamlessly from inside to outside. The engine is a combination of a flight-sim engine with a room-based structual engine. As well, Descent 3 boasts "Polygon Accurate Collision Detection" which gives objects mass, velocity, inertia, and other real-world qualities. And, for multiplayer enthusiasts, Descent 3 comes with out-of-the-box multiplayer support.

Not a true "Descent" title...
First off, I love the Descent series. Ever since the first one, I've been hooked. The whole aspect of 6 degrees of freedom, fighting through tight corners, battling robots with an FPS feel is just addicting. Descent I and II were incredible, you went through, clearing mines for PTMC. In this game, however, you find that PTMC is actually a very evil coporation and has infected the robots on purpose for their own evil desires. At the end of Descent II, your ship jumps to an unknown location, and you (as the Material Defender) are subjected to a high level of radiation, causing you to pass out, and your ship to drift into no where. You find out that PTMC, or rather, your boss, Dravis, has done this on purpose, so you join a rebel faction and go in to sabatoge PTMC. This completely ... First off, I love the Descent series. This completely changes the missions of the game, where each level has different objectives, and new experiences with the option of being outdoors, not just down in mines. What I love about this is the outdoor part, sometimes the mines just felt too cramped, too easy to explore. The outdoor sections add an entirely new aspect to the game, and makes it an intense new experience. Now, for what I don't like...I don't like the fact that they took away the "kill everything in sight, rescue the hostages, blow the reactor, and get the heck out of there!" aspect of the game. Even though at times it got repetitive, it was more fun to me than this games missions were. The action was just more intense, this is more confusing than anything else. Still, for fans of the series, this game is a must have, and a fun play for anyone who considers themself a gamer. Because it's not a true "Descent" game, it's only getting 4/5. And it's too bad Interplay fell apart...I'd like to see a Descent IV in the future, but I guess, who knows?

Descent 3 (with Mercenary expansion)
This is the second copy I've purchased so that I can play my son in multiplayer. This particular copy comes with the Mercenary expansion (which requires the original D3 to play). This game WILL run on Vista, Windows 7, XP, ME / 2000 and Windows 98, as well as Windows 95. It requires 32mb of ram on your motherboard, but they recommend at least 64, with 4mb of video ram. What this means for the modern PC user is quite simple - a fantastic and very fast-paced First Person Shooter that will run on nearly ANYthing. Have Linux? No problem, download WINE (it's free!). Have Mac? No problem, download VirtualBox by Sun (it's free!) and, so, this game is very strong and looks great on virtually every system anymore. It's a story-driven game that takes you through indoor and SOME closed-arena outdoor areas, blasting through mining robots that are suffering from a computer virus masterminded by the CEO of the mining operation. In the first two games, your pilot was unwittingly contracted as a mercenary to destroy the virus and the mining robots, but after leaving you to die in a trap (so they wouldn't have to pay you) in Descent2, this game picks up where the last one left off so that you can get vengeance against the CEO masterminds but not before helping innocents, scientists and other people they've kidnapped. This will require escorting, rescue operations and a quick wit to outmaneuver your robotic enemies. This game IS completely compatible with ALL USB CONTROLLERS, including X-Box360 controllers. My son and I OFTEN use our wired Xbox360 controllers to play this game. With such low specs requirements, it's a great game to play without stressing hardware, especially if you just want to play a really great game on a really old laptop. -Ken Weaver aka Kit Karamak

Just like old times.
I used to play Descent when it was a dos base game. It was one of the funnest games that I had. As dos went away so did many neat games that I used to have. They just wouldn't run on the new version of windows. I now am running windows XP and this game plays real nice. It is pretty much just like the original dos version too. The only real difference is on the good side. Better graphics hardware, better processors, just plain faster computers. Video, graphics, and everything run really smooth. For what I paid for the game there is no way you can go wrong. I figured I wouldn't be out much if I did not like the game or if it did not run well. But after loading it and playing it I am more than satisfied with it. I would recomend buying this game. I also got another game that came with ... I used to play Descent when it was a dos base game. Works Perfectly on Windows 10!
So much mis-information about will these 1995 discs work on Windows 10. Well, I'm telling you that all I did was place the disc in my DVD tray and followed the prompts. Happy camper here!

Descent 3 Sole Ascent Best Game of 1999-2006
I just want to say that this game is one of the best most technical and tactical Games available in the First Person Shooter Genre. THose of you who have played it know what I am talking about. NO other game gives you a Sureal 3D eviroment that is in constant 360 Degree Battle. Fast Paced Killer weaponry and also one of the best online Server models around, yes my fellow Gamers, it is better online then anyother game available. Low consistant pings accurate positioning and more then 180 directions that you can move in at anyone time. I suggest you die hard FPS gamers out their get this one. It will blow you away, Take heed, it will take months and even years to master this game, and will suck you in like a lost Cat looking for Scrubs. Take'em out Fellas and Babes this one is a ...
