Product Information

No more than a dark pencil line on a blank page. A horizon line, maybe. But also a slot for blackness to pour through...A terrible construction site accident takes Edgar Freemantle's right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. A marriage that produced two lovely daughters suddenly ends, and Edgar begins to wish he hadn't survived the injuries that could have killed him. He wants out. His psychologist, Dr. Kamen, suggests a "geographic cure," a new life distant from the Twin Cities and the building business Edgar grew from scratch. And Kamen suggests something else."Edgar, does anything make you happy?""I used to sketch.""Take it up again. You need hedges...hedges against the night."Edgar leaves Minnesota for a rented house on Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful, eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico and the tidal rattling of shells on the beach call out to him, and Edgar draws. A visit from Ilse, the daughter he dotes on, starts his movement out of solitude. He meets a kindred spirit in Wireman, a man reluctant to reveal his own wounds, and then Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman whose roots are tangled deep in Duma Key. Now Edgar paints, sometimes feverishly, his exploding talent both a wonder and a weapon. Many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth's past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating. The tenacity of love, the perils of creativity, the mysteries of memory and the nature of the supernatural -- Stephen King gives us a novel as fascinating as it is gripping and terrifying.

  • Duma Key Hardcover Book

King has written dozens of #1 bestsellers, some unforgettable and others forgettable, but with this new horror story I think he may be back on track like years before! This book takes on new ground for Mr. King. Hope to see a movie out of it. The book explores an eerie stretch of Florida coast where Edgar Freemantle has come to build his life after an accident that cost him his arm and head injuries that leave him prone to uncontrollable rages and memory lapses. He ends up in Duma Key only because his Dr. felt he needed a change of place, a geographical cure. Edgar hopes that while here in Duma Key he can pick up the painting he use to love in his younger years. What he discovers, is that his talent is more powerful than he remembered. By that, it means that the things he paints become ...

  • Very interesting

I have been a huge Stephen King fan since 1978 when I read The Stand for the first time. I ran right out and bought a copy. Not too bad for a kid still in high school! Living in Florida, it was an interesting premise to see how others viewed our beautiful state. As I read this book I was struck by the realization that it wasn't as odd as some previous novels were. It took a long time for it to get a bit creepy but hey, that's what Stephen King does best. The book was well written with the right amount of weirdness thrown in. Personally I enjoyed all 609 pages and thought the premise behind it was something I hadn't encountered before - not even in his books. The story is about a man recovering from a horrific accident and being encouraged to do something he enjoyed doing in what he ...

  • Duma Key by Stephen King

A man is maimed by a crane at work. Edgar loses his left arm, crushes his left hip and suffers some brain damage as a result of the accident and is no longer able to work construction. His Dr. recommends that he move to some place where he can recover. He meets the neighbor, Wireman, and they become friends and end up doing every thing from going to Art Shows to Haunted Houses!

  • Stephen King's Writing Thrives in Salt Air and Sunshine

After reading Stephen King's Duma Key, it is obvious that Florida's salt air and sunshine must agree with him. Like Edgar Freemantle, the book's protagonist, King seems to have found voices in the churning sea shells. The artistic style with which this book is written is like a refreshing breeze at sunset. Edgar Freemantle, a construction company owner, is nearly crushed to death by a piece of equipment, losing an arm, and most of his senses, due to a head injury. On the advice of his psychiatrist he relocates to the Florida Keys, specifically to Duma Key, and moves into a house he fondly calls "Big Pink." Shortly after moving in, Freemantle discovers he has supernatural artistic abilities. But his talent becomes a liability when he realizes that his artwork influences real-life ...

  • Duma Key

Same old same old ... more horror and darkness.. Mr. King has writing talent.. I wonder why he feels a need to explore the dark side of everything. He actually lives on that Key although it has a different name in real life. So far there have been no weird happenings in the local papers. He's probaby succeeded in scaring his neighbors half to death instead of writing a 5 star book. I think Mr. King should jog and get some air into his lungs instead of sitting at that writing desk. It may change his perspective so that he can use his awesome amazing talent to a better level.
