Product Information

The Nordic Classical movement in the early part of the twentieth century is one of the most important, and yet least studied, areas of Scandinavian architecture. While many of the Nordic Classicists went on to become leaders of the Modern Movement and several conspired with the historians of Modernism to draw a veil over their early work-it was the classical Scandinavian pavilions which were most admired by contemporary audiences at the Paris Exposition of 1925, rather than Le Corbusier's Pavilion de L'Esprit Nouveau. The architecture of this movement deserves to be better understood, both in its own right and as a precursor to Modernism. This is the first book to consider the movement as a whole and to examine the lives and work of ten of its most significant practitioners. These include Gunnar Asplund, Alvar Aalto, Sigurd Lewerentz and many others who deserve to be better known, as well as the key buildings of the movement such as the Stockholm Central Library, the Copenhagen Police Headquarters and the haunting landscape of the Stockholm Woodland Cemetery. Nordic Classicism presents a wide-ranging and in-depth account of the movement in the context of the social and cultural changes to which its architects were responding. Book jacket.

Reviews
I have put this book on my students' core reading list. And they like it, drawn in by the author's obvious admiration of--and professional insight into--the works he presents.
