  • Hornblower hits the target

Let me preface this review by saying I love historical fiction set during the Napoleonic wars. And let me say that I may be a little biased with my review. I have read all the Hornblower books, and they too are excellent fun. If you love well written and intelligent action movies you owe it to yourself to watch all the Hornblower movies. Ioan Gruffudd does a top-notch job playing Horatio Hornblower. Horatio is frail, and insecure, but also brave and brilliant. Horatio is complex unlike those one dimensional characters in those B quality action movies. The acting in this series is high quality; those Brits sure know how to act :) The production values are good, but not great which does not affect the stories too much. These movies are action movies, but they are character driven, so the ...

  • Great Series--Great Leading Character

My husband read these books when he was a boy 60+ years ago. He says the stories, taken from novels by C.S. Forester, have never lost their charm (for lack of a better word) over all these years. The main character is a young man with a wonderful character who is faced with several moral and ethical dilemas as well as military related (Royal Navy) decisions through the story. The action scenes are quite awesome and there is always a decent ending. These stories are highly recommended.

  • Movies Worth Seeing

I purchased this collection as a gift for our son. He borrowed one of our tapes and has watched it many times. After viewing ours many times I knew it would be "safe" to give as it never loses its appeal. I love the development of the many characters throughout Hornblowers career - some you love and some you love to hate - but they make the story. My only complaint with them would be the fighting/bloody scenes. I could easily get by with listening to them and imagining the sword fighting. I would definitely recommend this set to anyone who is offended at the lack of good movies on the market today.

  • Historical Fiction from the Age of Sail. Well Done!

A very well done series. Amazing ships, great acting, interesting and detailed. Follows the story lines from Foresters books.

  • A must for fans of Hornblower and C. S. Forester

I made this purchase as I was searching for an A&E sequel to this series. I am quite pleased with the set, and pleased with myself for finding it at such a good price. A&E outdid itself in this marvelous series. It is a must-see for fans of Forester's beloved character. Ioan Gruffudd makes a top-flight Horatio Hornblower -- brooding, sensitive, intense. The direction and photography are almost flawless. The screenwriter was thankfully faithful to the tone of the Forester books and the tone of the natural and human hardships of the early 19th c. Royal Navy.
