Spike Jones at his best!
Spike Jones and his City Slickers were not just talented musicians, able to play in a variety of musical styles, they had to be able to do comedy as well. This dvd features some of the City Slickers best examples of "Musical Depreciation". It's too bad these shows were only in black and white, as Spike and his group wore some very colorful outfits. Overall, the quality here is excellent, both picture and sound. The material here was originally available on VHS tapes, so it's good that we can have it on dvd. A fun viewing experience with Spike's one of a kind musical arrangements.
There are a few Spike Jones DVD available for sale, but this one contains some songs and sketches not seen in other sets, especially Spike's slightly toned down excerpts from his television show.. The quality of writing varies from skit to skit, but overall, this is a very enjoyable viewing experience. Billy Barty was amazing, as are the rest of the Slickers. Clean and corny humor with some of the jazziest arrangements of foot tapping music you will ever hear!There are a few Spike Jones DVD available for sale, but this one contains some songs and sketches not seen in other sets, especially Spike's slightly toned down excerpts from his television show.. The Best of Spike Jones
This is a great DVD package that gives a selection of some of the episodes of the Spike Jones TV show that ran in the 1950's. If you never were familiar with him, or his recordings, this is a good way introduction. The humor is just as funny today as it was then, tho some references are dated and may not be understood by those under 50 yrs old. I doubt if there are any present day musicians who have the talent, timing, and expertise that it took to do this type of music, or would appreciate the work that went into each production. The Best of Spike Jones (DVD, 2009)
I bought this for a younger friend who had never heard of Spike Jones. I was a product of the 1950's and used to do 'record pantomimes' for high school shows using his records. Mr. Jones was very popular in my early days, and now my friend knows why! Spike was a wonderful musician. Not only did his group perform comedy material, but also some serious music.
