Reviews
"Within a matter of days, Hannah Parks's privileged life is completely upended. Having overcome a tumultuous childhood, Hannah is now the wife of a millionaire technology mogul in Seattle. However, the anger and rage of a violent and deadly past have never really left her. Sudden questions about her husband and the state of her marriage rapidly lead to her kidnapping. A charismatic stranger named Black is in charge of making her disappear, but even he begins to have issues with the master plan of Hannah's captors. As part of the scenario, Hannah has been branded a fugitive, so she must piece together what's happening while on the run with Black.  Verdict Wilson's (Final Crossing; The Boy in the Woods) third novel takes off at breakneck speed and doesn't stop until its jolting conclusion. Gritty, unflinching, and sometimes violent, this thriller is reminiscent of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and the television series The Equalizer. The characters are intriguing and the writing deliciously descriptive. Adrenaline junkies and fans of darker crime fiction will take to this book, which is compelling and exciting enough to be read in one sitting.", "Here's a thriller that thrills, a mystery that mystifies. And it confirms your sense that everyone but you knows what's really going on, and your best friend is awaiting the proper time to insert the knife. Hannah Parks had a troubled childhood--a brutal father and a mother who died of hopelessness--but things have smoothed out. Her millionaire husband adores her. So why has he taken to ranting in his sleep about sadistic sex? Shocked, Hannah sneaks a look at his computer files. What she sees is followed by something worse: he catches her looking. They separate and suddenly Hannah is encountering men in black who know a lot about her. Do they wish to help? Why? And why must help involve gunfire, even killing a cop? Midway through, a layer of reality is peeled away and we, along with Hannah, must distrust everything we see. More illusions appear and vanish, until somehow Hannah is reliving her miserable childhood. Revelations in the final pages may strain credulity, but never mind. Getting there is great fun." Booklist, Carter Wilson's  The Comfort of Black  is a superior thriller full of unpredictable twists. Themes of the repetition of history, familial dirty secrets, and one woman's journey to self-empowerment cruise deftly through this novel's suspenseful scenes. In addition to its rollicking pace and complex characters, the book's turns of phrase and evocative imagery make it enjoyable. Hannah's premarital fling is "a romance that lasted not much longer than the flowers." A promontory is described as "a snake of land." Hannah thinks of the color black: "She could hide in [it]. Wrap it around her." Thriller aficionados, especially women, will wrap themselves in this novel's pages with gusto." ForeWord Reviews, Dark and intense.  Carter Wilson expertly evokes the terrors inside the most dangerous human domain of all-the family., Growing up with an abusive father, Hannah Parks knows the pain and suffering the family goes through. When she watches her husband, Dallin, become distant and uncommunicative, she knows something is wrong. Once in his sleep, Dallin reveals a dark side to his personality that Hannah never suspected. When she confronts her husband she realizes that there is more to him than his dream even revealed. Forced to run after Dallin tries to have her daughter Hannah abducted, she encounters Blackstone Morrow, an expert at helping people disappear and start a new life. With the aid of Black, Hannah is able to hide from Dallin and hopefully find the answers she desperately needs.  This suspenseful mystery pulls the reader in from the prologue and doesn't let go until the last word is read! Containing no lulls or boring areas, the plot moves at a steady pace while the tension mounts to a reckless speed. With vivid, well-defined characters, this tale keeps the reader on the edge of the seat with unexpected twists and turns and enough suspense to keep the pages turning rapidly. In addition, the well-constructed and believable story line is solid and riddled with numerous surprises that keep one guessing and veering in the wrong direction. Although there is a minimal amount of romance, there is plenty of mystery and drama to keep even the staunchest romance lover interested. With a riveting story line and gripping suspense, this novel is impossible to put down until the last page is read., If you are drawn to the dark games of Stephen King and the ordinary-meets-terror of Harlan Coben, you're going to love Carter Wilson's new thriller. In The Comfort of Black , Wilson slides open a bedroom window and introduces us to a lovely wife with a tortured past and the secretive man who sleeps beside her. It only takes a single whisper and then there is no safe place--only twist after twist, lie after lie, until you are gleefully riding a frenzy of psychological panic into the wee hours., "If you are drawn to the dark games of Stephen King and the ordinary-meets-terror of Harlan Coben, you're going to love Carter Wilson's new thriller. A very fine thriller guaranteed to keep you up all night."--Bestselling Author, Carla Buckley, * "Wilson's third novel [ The Comfort of Black ] takes off at breakneck speed and doesn't stop until its jolting conclusion. Gritty, unflinching, and sometimes violent, this thriller is reminiscent of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and the television series The Equalizer ." -- Library Journal (Starred Review) * "Carter is extremely good at creating a series of shattering, Philip K. Dickian revelations that would rock anyone's personal security." -- Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"From the very first shocking, irreverent and chilling line you know The Comfort of Black is anything but your average thriller. It's an exemplary thriller. A knock-your-socks-off- thriller." --M.J. Rose, New York Times best-selling author "Wilson is right up there--if not beyond--James Patterson and Stephen King. The Comfort of Black is edgy, completely absorbing, and a definite must read by all." -- The U.S. Review of Books Praise for Carter Wilson * "[In Revelation ,] Wilson infuses his terrifying plot with intricate twists and turns, all totally credible." -- Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) "This is a sledgehammer of a novel, slamming away at the foundations of modern cult religions until nothing is left but rubble to be carted away." -- Booklist " Revelation is an exquisite story of psychological control and suspense that is both thought-provoking and visceral in its impact, and it will keep you awake far into the night." -- The Oklahoman, "Hannah Parks, the heroine of Carter's outstanding paranoid thriller, is the tightly wrapped and semi-alcoholic but nevertheless determinedly happy wife of Dallin, a rising Seattle Internet-security entrepreneur--until Dallin mutters words in his sleep that suggest he's a sadistic murderer. Then everything falls apart. None of the certainties in Hannah's life can be trusted: all the people around her are potential traitors, and she isn't safe anywhere. She even suspects that the personable and ultracompetent man who calls himself Black may have come to her rescue a bit too conveniently. Hannah's brutal childhood makes her believably vulnerable, and Carter ( The Boy in the Woods ) is extremely good at creating a series of shattering, Philip K. Dickian revelations that would rock anyone's personal security. The explanation for all the devious plotting, perhaps inevitably, is somewhat anticlimactic, but readers still will be absorbed by Hannah's struggle to understand what has been done to her and to re-create a sane life." -- Publishers Weekly - Starred Review, I've always admired Carter Wilson's work, but The Comfort of Black flat out grabbed me by the throat―in the best possible sense. Here is a novel by a literary wizard. Imagine a tall, saturnine magician in a long sable coat who keeps whisking out tricks and wonders, shocks and surprises from pocket after hidden pocket--and he has a great many pockets indeed. Wilson expertly maps the moral complexities of siblings and spouses, dysfunctional families, and conspiracies that raise the bar for crime thrillers. It all funnels into a symphony of Shakespearean violence wherein the author defies the odds and demonstrates a perfect sense of balance. This is an astonishing performance., "Award winning thriller-author Carter Wilson takes readers on a surreal fight-or-flight-response-for-survival journey in his third novel. Every part of Wilson's third-person narrative is aptly designed to be nothing less than unnerving. Wilson's spine-chilling scenarios are set within an intense 30-day journal entry that is broken into three simple yet mysterious one-word-titled sections. Zeroing in on his protagonist, Wilson's random use of limited voice is equally unnerving as he displays Hannah's ramblings that include harrowing recollections to her abusive father. Surrounded by a handful of elusive characters, Hannah doesn't know what to believe since she has had so many stories thrown at her. Amid the constant confusion his protagonist's life, Wilson keeps his plot moving by creatively injecting unhackneyed twists and turns as well as black comedy. There is no doubt in this reviewer's mind that Wilson is right up there--if not beyond--to James Patterson and Stephen King.  The Comfort of Black  is edgy, completely absorbing, and a definite must read by all." RECOMMENDED by the USR, Hannah and Dallin seemed to have the perfect marriage. At least Hannah always thought so. Until she finally realized that Dallin had, little by little, been pulling away from her. She's thinking they could start a family; until one night she hears him mumbling in his sleep. What he says is so filthy she's horrified. This is not the Dallin she knew and loved. Checking into his past, Hannah learns things she would rather not know. Dallin attempts to have her kidnapped - which is foiled by a man who goes by the name of Black. He promises to keep her from Dallin's clutches. Hannah can't understand Dallin's sudden turn to violence. This is where the plot thickens. You'll start turning pages more quickly. Suspense leaps from them. Intrigues are rampant. Tension mounts. A frightening ending brings a sigh of relief. The Comfort of Black  is Carter Wilson's third novel. He has produced an exciting tale. It will stay in your mind for days after you read the explanation of relationships that puts all the characters in their right places. And what characters they are., "If you are drawn to the dark games of Stephen King and the ordinary-meets-terror of Harlan Coben, you're going to love Carter Wilson's new thriller. More illusions appear and vanish, until somehow Hannah is reliving her miserable childhood. Revelations in the final pages may strain credulity, but never mind. Getting there is great fun., "Following The Boy in the Woods, Carter Wilson presents likeable heroine Hannah, whose "one drink a day had grown to three or more." As a teen, Hannah had escaped a "violently dysfunction family" and fled to Seattle. Clerking in a hotel, she acquires wealth and status by marrying internet security entrepreneur Dallin, but now they've fallen out of love, their sex life in the morgue. "The richer we get the emptier I feel." Depicted through a somewhat contrived scenario, she fears Dallin murdered someone and now seems intent on offing Hannah. After she finds incriminating information on his computer, Dallin chokes Hanna. Escaping with only the clothes she wears and a cell phone, Dallin contacts Hannah proposing an amicable split of their marriage and $40 million, but she wants to meet in a public place. Hannah arrives early to scope out the hotel lobby. A man with Cary Grant-like charisma approaches. He calls himself Black, short for Blackstone. He has an interesting profession: "I help people start new lives." For a fee. He was his own first client. Black had escaped prison and is a master of disguises, "something out of a Cold War spy novel." How does one go off the grid in an electronic world of constant contact? Here's where action scenes seem like bowling pins set up only to be an easy strike. Hannah and Black go on the lam, and he makes amateurish mistakes, belying his skills as a covert operator. Wilson's saving grace is the predicament Hannah faces: Who to trust on a lava flow landscape?", "If you are drawn to the dark games of Stephen King and the ordinary-meets-terror of Harlan Coben, you're going to love Carter Wilson's new thriller. Hannah is a very likeable character, caught up in her past, trying to make sense of her present and hurtling toward the future. Her path is not helped by her pursuers, some of whom she considers her friends and family.  With this book, Carter Wilson joins the masters of the genre. The moment you think about those fictional characters, you start feeling the pain they went through. It just feels like you knew them so well and in just one page turn, they are all gone.
