Togetherness in Swan Lake
Whenever there are multiple dancers doing the same routine, they are remarkably together. That holds for the 18 to 24 dancers in the flock of swans and it goes for two, three, or four dancers performing as one. The individual dancers are also excellent, and the story line is engaging. Very well choreographed and very expertly danced. It was my first look at the Swedish Royal Ballet. I almost didn't get the dvd because I have several other versions I enjoy, but I'm going to see the company next weekend at Segerstrom (Costa Mesa CA) next weekend and I wanted a preview. A common man's point of view.
This is a very beautiful ballet produced by a very knowledgeable Sir Peter Wright. Mr. Wright researches his ballet productions to the point of origin, and he even tries to find out what the composer had in mind when he wrote the music. In this case the composer was Tchaikovsky, who once said, (after hearing the music for "Sylvia" by Leo Delibes) that if he had heard the music for Sylvia before he wrote his music for "Swan Lake", he would not have written the music for "Swan Lake". Of course, we can ALL be thankful that Tchaikovsky did NOT hear the Sylvia music first because we would not have our beloved Swan Lake. By the way, if you do not have "Sylvia", BUY it. Be sure and buy the Royal Ballet version with Darcey Bussell and Roberto Bolle. This ballet by the Royal Swedish Ballet, stars ... Be sure and buy the Royal Ballet version with Darcey Bussell and Roberto Bolle. This ballet by the Royal Swedish Ballet, stars Nathalie Nordquist As Odette/Odile. She is very young and extremely beautiful. Her partner is Anders Nordstrom, a very handsome and capable Prince Siegfried, who shows in his acting that he is so much in love with Odette, that you feel terribly sorry for him when he is tricked by Rothbart and his daughter Odile. There is a lot of mime used in this version of Swan Lake. More than any version I have except the American Ballet Theatre version. Odette shows Siegfried why he cannot kill Rothbart, otherwise her curse could never be broken. She goes on to tell him that she is the Queen of all the Swan Maidens, and that it was her tears (and perhaps tears from the other maidens) that formed the lake they inhabit. Mime is also a beautiful use of the arms and hands, and can be very expressive when done well. In act IV Odette also tells her subjects, the maidens, that she has to kill herself, since Siegfried has unwittingly broken his oath of everlasting love. They try to convince her not to, but Rothbart is creating so much chaos and irritating the other Swan Maidens to such an extent that she kills herself by jumping into the lake of tears, with Siegfried following her. What emotional impact. From the action on the stage to the music by Tchaikovsky, who was an absolute genius at writing music to stir the heart. The sets and costuming for this version are stunning, however, there is a little black against black in a few scenes. Over all it is well photographed and the lighting is acceptable. The music is very good quality in stereo and surround. The ballet running time is 131 minutes, and there are 31 minutes of very informative bonus material. My copy would not load onto my HD-DVD player even though it is NTSC format, but it does load onto my non HD-DVD player, and the picture resolution is very good. I highly recommend this version of Swan Lake. P.S. I reordered this ballet, (the same Ballet) and found that my first copy must have been defective, since the new copy loaded onto my HD-DVD player just fine. So, if you get an NTSC copy that won't load, send it back for a replacement.
