The leading lady is, as many times before, suddenly unavailable and the understudy chorus girl is thrust into the limelight. DAMES: This backstage musical features dancing ironing boards and puzzle pieces amongst its surreal delights. Blondell, Keeler and Powell sing, dance and chew up the scenery in a hoary plot about a rich bluenose's attempts to close down a Broadway show. Never mind. Just keep your eyes on those chorus lines in numbers such as "Girl at the Ironing Board," and "I Only Have Eyes for You."FOOTLIGHT PARADE: A stage producer discovers that talking pictures have killed the demand for musical shows, so he re-channels his talents into creating live musical numbers for movie theaters to present between features. His fledgling business is threatened by unscrupulous business partners, conniving golddiggers, and spying competitors. GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933: A classic 1930s musical, GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 offers some of Busby Berkeley's most spectacular choreography. The gold diggers are out-of-work showgirls Carol, Polly, and Trixie, played respectively by Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, and Aline MacMahon. All three hope for a job on a new musical about the Depression but soon find out that the supposed producer is also flat broke. Then young singer-composer Brad Roberts (Dick Powell) offers to foot the bill--provided that Polly plays the lead. When Brad is forced to play opposite her on opening night, his upper-crust family finds out that he is engaged to the penniless actress--and they send a henchman to drag Brad back home.GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935: It's the summer season at a swanky resort, and none of the employees have any qualms about fleecing the rich guests for all they're worth in this madcap Busby Berkeley farce. Dick Curtis (Dick Powell) sings and romances Ann Prentiss (Gloria Stuart), but her shrill millionaire mom (Alice Brady) insists she marry eccentric T. Mosley Thorpe (Hugh Herbert) instead. The Busby Berkeley (Almost) Collection
I have waited for years for this only to find someone at Warner Bros. or Turner Entertainmnet thought it was necessary to do a little censorship! I have owned the Laserdisc version called "The Busby Berkeley Disc" since it was released by MGM/UA in 1992. It is on 2 laserdiscs and contains all of the great production numbers featured on the new DVD set plus just one more. It is from the 1934 film "Wonder Bar" entitled "Goin' to Heaven on a Mule" starring Al Jolson. This number features Al Jolson and probably most of the cast in black face! Granted it is a shock to see just how bad the racial stereotypes are played here in a heaven for blacks that is right out of Harlem of the 30's. I think it is important for a new generation of Busby Berkeley fans to know just how segregated a society we ... A Busby Berkely fan's dream!
This a is superb collection of the intricate and unorthodox dance numbers filmed at Warner Brothers during the 1930s. Busby Berkely invented and directed the overhead camera technique for years and this set of DVDs has been beautifully and lovingly transferred from film to this modern medium. The Warner Brothers orchestra, known for its wonderful brass section, never sounded better. The collection includes several movies in their entirety and a disc that features just the dance numbers. I would have liked more written information about the techniques used and more about the stars. A fantastic collection of some of the most enjoyable movies made. Today's blockbusters have nothing on the outrasgeous manipulations of bevies of beautifual babes (or Dames! as they are titled in on of these movies). My absolute favorite is the end musical number of "Footlight Parade" when Jimmy Cagney and ensemble sing "Shanghai Lil". The depictions of seedy expatriots from around the globe at the bar is priceless. And the sixth DVD which has just the musical numbers is a GREAT workout video. I just pop it in and try to keep up with the swiftly tapping toes of Ruby and Ginger. This collection makes all the terrible tortures Mr. Berkeley put all those dancers through worth every minute of sore legs and blistered feet, as we are more than entertained more than ... Extremely nice set of 1930s Busby Berkely musicals.
If you love vintage Hollywood musicals, put this package on your buy list. Busby Berkely was the master in this realm. Plots are similar but so what. Read King Lear if you need a great plot :) The box on the set was busted up, *as advertised by the seller*, but the disks are excellent and the video quality is as good as can be.

Tons of fun
I wasn’t a musical person in my youth. It’s just that the movie industry now is so putrid that investing in the lost art of the movie craft is a fortunate gold mine. It’s like going to the farmers market, there’s tons of great stuff to seek out. May be to simple for millennials
