From the developers at Westwood Studios comes Dune 2000, a real-time strategy game. Throughout the planet of Arrakis (a desert-like planet riddled with dunes and sand), three military powers have engaged in a fierce war to control a most prized resource known as the Spice Melange. The mysterious spice can only be found on the planet of Arrakis; every race in the known universe lusts for its power. With all the bickering and fighting over Spice Melange, the Emperor has issued a challenge that basically states whoever controls the substance will control Arrakis. The three aforementioned forces include the noble House Atreides, the wicked House Harkonnen, and the enigmatic House Ordos. Not only does each house desire control, they also have different reasons for entering the war. The House Atreides loathes and fears the evil forces of the Harkonnen and wishes to form an alliance with the Fremen, strange sand-dwelling warriors that inhabit the bowels of the planet. The nobles function much like a normal army, giving commands for the side of good. On the other hand, House Harkonnen is run by a tyrannical baron that demands victory. These blood-drinking savages enjoy battles and chaos more than the actual victory; they reign with widespread fear. House Ordos is a bit more unorthodox than their warring brethren. Led by cyborg-like officers, they go into battle with a strategic mentality and play for the odds. Gut feelings aren't acceptable in their society. Having arrived with Lady Alara on the desertous Arrakis, she has enlisted you as a commander of one of the three military powers. Her sisterhood is hoping that you will be victorious with that house above all others, as to create a clear faction in control of the Spice Melange in which her Order could form an alliance. After selecting the house of your liking, a commander will give you a military briefing and objective. As a 3D real-time strategy game, you'll begin by constructing a series of battle units, important housing structures (walls, construction yards, barracks, outposts) and vehicles; this is vital in order to meet the mission objective. You'll start the scenario with a power supply for building a Spice Melange refinery to generate money. Afterwards, it's up to you to build a fully operational base. Upon completion of the necessary structures, it's time to attack your opposition! You'll command and control a wide variety of light infantry soldiers, troopers, saboteurs, and the aforementioned Fremen. Dune 2000 also supports the Dual Shock Analog Controller for analog movements and the vibration function. It also comes with mouse support. You can utilize any PlayStation memory card for saving game data and options.

"OH-SKOO" RTS, But Still Compelling & Dynamic, Even In 2012
This pioneering RTS game follows in the footsteps of Dune 2, for the PC, which I played first in the early 1990's, and is BTW, a bit better overall (graphics and control primarily), good luck with finding a computer to run that one though - probably only availably on an emulator now... At any rate, Dune 2000 for the original PS1 is still quite enjoyable and dynamic. Although the graphics, at first, reminded me of original nintendo (the men and vehicles kinda look like pixalated blobs), as the game progressed, the overall gameplay compensated for it. The storyline follows the books/movies, and there is an ititial choice to play as one of the three "houses" (teams), each with it's own unique weaponry - again, as the game progresses. The cutscenes between levels are thankfully brief, but ... Overall gameplay is VERY time consuming, with initial levels taking little time, to later levels taking numerous hours - just to build and fortify the initial base setup (this doesn't even include completing the required tasks), which can be seen as good or bad, depending on the player. I found it frustrating that I could not figure out how to save within the level (between levels it is afforded), which meant that if a level was started, hours better be available to finish it, or the work would entirely be lost. Other features that seemed to be missing were an auto-recall back to base, and the "team" labeling didn't seem to work right. Also, scrolling through the larger maps was a bit tedious... back and forth, back and forth. All in all, for what it's worth, this is a pretty good game to own, especially if RTS (and like to build, attack, defend, strategize, etc.) is your thing. And although the graphics are indeed lacking, and the controls miss a few marks, it is nonetheless fun, compelling, challenging, dynamic, and replay value is very high, as the different houses can be chosen to play (and different cut scenes watched).

Great game, shipping material wasn’t sufficient.
First off the game worked so that’s great. Old memories of 24 hour gameplay sessions bringing me back. The only gripe about this purchase is the case cracked off a piece because it was only in a bubble mailer. Jewel cases are notorious for breaking in those, so a little sad to see but happy I got a working game.

As an avid Dune fan, I'be been playing the PC versions of the dune games release by Westwood for many years. I've never owned game consules and was given one last year as a birthday present (Playstation 2). Thanks to e-Bay, I've been able to find all my Dune games for the game system and this was the last game I had to get. The similarities to the PC version are there of course, but the game controls took a little getting used to, since I'd always played the game with a mouse. I'm enjoying the game in a whole new way - using the game contrl is faster in some ways and not in others so there's some adjusting I have to do. A Hidden Gem PS1 Strategy Game!
Truly a better version than the original Dune RTS but on the PS1 with improvements and it can even be played with the PS1 mouse!
